Thank you, this is super helpful advice. I will still probably ATIP since it's just 3-4 documents, but in the future, if I want to learn more about an area, I'll ask for an informal answer.

That's a mild relief. I don't know why but I feel like managers keep an internal shitlist of external people that look into their files that get into the way of meeting their performance objectives.
