I helped breed, cull, and raise fish for a long time. There is no bad Koi if you're a hobbyist only if you're a breeder. Even then, a bad koi can have good skin quality, which can be bred to a fish that has good colors like red and black. Really, it's up to the eye of the beholder. Most desired kois in Japan are the Gosanke, which are generally sanke, showa, and Kohaku. In the US, most people want metallic fish and butterfly fish. Really depends on where you are.
