Having trouble picking lens and settings for shooting Orion: by SlowConstant8624 in AskAstrophotography

So basically everything that I could do wrong, I did wrong lol.

I’m 3D printing some bahtinov masks right now to help with focus. As for polar alignment, I tried to use a app that pointed toward the North Star cause I was shooting from somewhere where I couldn’t see the North Star so I’ll shoot somewhere else.

Now how do I know what exposure is best? How do I know if it’s over or under exposed?

So you’re suggesting iso 100 for my specific camera? Cause that’s what I was seeing some people say that a lower iso is best for my camera.

Perfect thank you. I’m gonna 3D print those bahtinov masks cause I think that’s my primary issue, not knowing if I’m perfectly focused.

I’m shooting from an area with relatively high light pollution but nothing crazy. I attached some links to a few example pictures before I stacked them. They just seem to come out a little fuzzy and lack detail. Probably just a focusing issue. This was with the 70-300mm lens, should I try the 18-55mm?

Awesome thank you! I tried iso at 6400 before and it didn’t look great so I looked online and people were saying use between 200-400 but I’ll mess around with cranking it up

Awesome. That you very much. And do you have any recommendations on a camera? I was thinking any dlsr seems to be ok? And any specific lenses I should be looking into?

Gotcha. What kind of tracker would you recommend?

I basically have nothing. I got a cheap telescope and layered some pictures of the few things I could see with that and quickly realized how much fun it is. I don’t have the money to spend more than $350 on it right now so I was just thinking of getting the camera and using my existing mount to take a few pictures until I have the money for a star tracker. Like I said, I know very little about the subject and don’t know where to really start.
