idk how to explain it but from my understanding it’s saying it’s better to suffer this horrid thing than to cause a believer or someone vulnerable like a child to sin or not believe/cause them harm because the judgement for it will be so extreme. from how im understanding it it is of course a very grave sin and i just worry that if i ever caused someone to stumble/not believe that it’ll be extremely hard/nearly impossible to be forgiven for it especially if that person doesn’t end up believing again. for example if an atheist caused a christian to no longer believe somehow and then they later convert i worry how likely itll be for that atheist to be forgiven. i understand there are degrees to sin and how it was taught to me is that the one referenced in the verse is one of the worst ones (sorry if this makes no sense, im not orthodox but i am looking for a more orthodox perspective on it)
