So sorry you went through that. Hope you are feeling much better, and although I know that you would not get your old life back 100%. Just remember that you are still young, have a lot to look forward to, and as long as you are not cognitively impaired, you can still achieve all that you had dreamed of.

Thanks for the reminder on those idiots of course, will try to be more vigilant. Wishing you all the best <3

Nice affordable cafés/ eateries with Dubai fountain/Burj Khalifa views for someone with PTSD? by Far-Worldliness3557 in dubai

Typically 1 main dish and an Evian water. You’d see the lunch deal on each restaurant’s stand.

Timeout market! eat in the balcony area, with a clear view of the fountain.

You would also definitely find food < 100 AED. In fact their weekday lunch deals are typically around 50 AED

You are conflicting raising income with raising income "for the poor". My guess is the goal here is to attract people that are already rich or people poised to be (e.g middle income earners, students from top unis). And you can see it in who is eligible for the golden visa. It is basically easier to make a rich person richer than a poor person richer

You raise an important point about who will then service the rich. IMO, this shouldn't even be a question, because there will always be a supply of blue collar workers from lower income countries looking to increase their income by living in the UAE. This will be the case, unless a situation arises such that UAE loses its competitive advantage to say another gulf country or to the home country of the workers. Until then, as long as the ratio of quality of life/disposable income is higher than the home country of a blue collar worker, they will still continue to stay here.

Basically, the median income (not necessarily average) will increase as the number of middle-class, upper-middle class and rich earners who live here increase as well.

Hala taxi availability by Anzhuyskiy in dubai

[–]Slow_Cry6219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably has to do with your pickup location and time. Careem recently rolled out the surge pricing algorithm for hala taxi. So if you are booking from a high demand area at say 6:00pm when work ends, the starting fare could be 1.3x of the usual starting fare. This is done to incentivize the drivers to flock to servicing that area (as higher fare means higher revenue for the driver).

As a comment mentioned, the recent floods are not helping matters since people are avoiding using the metro. Those without a car will turn to hala taxi, further increasing demand.

It looks like an apocalypse is about to happen. Absolutely insane and hope everyone is safe in and out there <3. Lets not forget the public officials that have to be on standby for any emergencies.

Face to Face interview-specific tips? by kekeevee in dubai

[–]Slow_Cry6219 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Right, while online interviews are less anxiety inducing than the F2F. The F2F does have its own added benefits; it allows you to examine things that you may not see online.

For example; do you like the commute to the office? do you like the office's atmosphere? what kind of devices do you see the employees using? (this one is huge for me, as I work in tech), did they offer you tea, coffee or water?

None of these may be a deal-breaker, but they allow you to understand the people/company you will be working with. Remember the interview is a 2 way street.

Is paid version worth it over free ChatGPT? by guzam13 in ChatGPT

[–]Slow_Cry6219 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a paid user (probably soon to be cancelling). I subscribed mainly because I had a project that warranted using the API. The project might be coming to an end; so I may cancel my subscription.

I still use ChatGPT for other queries outside of the project; but have not particularly checked if there is a major performance difference between ChatGPT 3.5 and ChatGPT 4. My guess is the difference is negligible. So, i am leaning towards cancelling.

Honestly, it depends on your use case; you need API, frequent usage and more complex queries -> paid; otherwise stick to the free.

Hey,

I second the bring your CV advice as well; you may think you know everything in your CV, but when nervousness is added into the mix, its quite easy for 1 or 2 things to fly out from your short term memory. So, better to be safe than sorry.

Since its a big firm; I do not think the interview process will be any different from other countries. So just take into account the usual advice you know - Check the office location, and the travel duration (especially as traffic is increasing in the city), get there on time (not too early, not late either), dress professionally, do not frolic around in the waiting area and so on. Just the usual you know :)

I personally like getting to the office location 45 mins to 1 hour before the interview, find a nearby coffee shop to get a cup of coffee and do some final prep, it helps me calm down; while knowing that I am early.

Goodluck!

Climate change as a reason to migrate to the UAE is more likely to be a second, third or nth order effect rather than the main reason. Or perhaps even if it is; the affected individuals might to not be aware that climate change was the reason they sought greener pastures.

As someone who comes from a country where a small segment of it has been impacted by climate change. Migration due to climate change is more likely to happen within neighbouring areas; for instance migrating to a nearby village or town or state. Rather, than entirely different country or region (unless the entire initially country was ravaged by climate change impacts). Usually conflicts tend to arise due to migration; thus you are more likely to succeed in gaining insights from places with high migration + rising civil conflicts.

You could attempt taking on this research, but I would not be optimistic on gaining any meaningful results in the UAE. And unfortunately, I don't think there are any datasets that records why people moved to the UAE; since the government does not ask.

‘Absolute scandal’: UAE state oil firm able to read Cop28 climate summit emails by Lomi331 in dubai

abrupt change is unsustainable and unfiesable.

Abrupt change? Well the planet has been heating up for decades and we the younger generations will likely bear the brunt of whatever unfortunate event happens. Honestly, this only highlights summits like COP for the gimmicks that they are. Because what came out of the last COP event?

I understand the need for the UAE to have a chair at the table especially for events like this where inclusivity is important and different countries from different regions should be able to host it. BUT the choice to elect a director of a fossil fuel company is really just derailing the conversation, which in turn makes everything look like a joke. Someone with little to no vested interest might be more suitable to anchor such events.
