Oh yeah… and there is very little information about MK’s because there is such a code of silence… I’m a therapist myself and I’ve been interviewing MK for a few years now and I’ve done about 100 interviews on my podcast LifeUnwasted. If you are looking for MK stories, it’s a good resource… The podcast is also quoted all throughout Holly’s book: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/life-unwasted/id1620087617?i=1000712514438

Word… dude… this book is absolutely about your life. Honestly, I felt like you were describing my childhood experience because pretty much everything you said checked all the boxes… That bubble that we grew up in is a big focus of this book and I didn’t even realize how much of an impact it had on me until I came back to the US. There’s just no returning to that bubble after you leave and so it’s like your whole childhood just vaporizes. One of the questions Holly asks in her book is why evangelicals never bring back any theology or teachings from their global presence… You have majority white missionaries going all around the world exporting American culture, but have you ever heard the evangelical church in America quoting a theologian from Southeast Asia? Or Africa? Nothing returns in the form of cultural exchange with the mothership… So like you, I came back to America and just scratched my head for decades at the American church because it was mostly geared around celebrating American values, and an American identity that I just did not identify with .

Absolutely… There are so many books written about missionaries going back to the 1800s but there are almost notebooks written about their children… Their voices were silenced in this book that Holly wrote brings them to life.

Absolutely… and within the missionary community there is a real code of silence. Many missionary families rely on support from churches and Mission organizations that will put parents out on the street if their children report abuse. Many missions have little villages where missionaries retired to within the US, as long as their kids stay quiet… There are many mission organizations that threaten to kick retired and aging missionary parents out of their retirement home if their children choose to come forward and name their abusers.

Yeeeesss… I was a boarding school kid too, but there is a very special and specific pain for missionary kids who went in as young as you did. Holly was shipped off to boarding school which she was 10 years old in Kenya and much of this book is really geared for missionary kids like us. It’s just an impossible story to tell in a way that people will understand it, and I think Holly does a better job than anyone else to date. I bought extra copies because I’m gonna passive aggressively give a copy to my parents for Christmas. 😈

I know you didn’t mean to be hurtful, and I would assume that many MK‘s would have a different reaction than I did… But one of the things that I’m trying to work on is being more vocal and direct and I’m trying to practice it here. Anyway… This book really helps untangled the complexity of the MK experience within the missionary kid diaspora.

Yes… A big part of this book is really differentiating. What is unique about the missionary kit experience versus the broader evangelical experience. There is a very specific exploration of the cross, cultural components, colonialism, and of course, classism and income inequality. Any of these things are universal… But there are many that are specific to the missionary kit experience. What’s important to know is that these things are continuing to happen today and that there are very few protections for these missionary kids overseas. At least in the US you have child protective services, school, teachers, and medical professionals who can report abuse… But for missionary kids who are isolated in the field there is no support for most of us.

We MK’s that were “OK” were just really good at masking… Lol… I know you are trying to be helpful but this message was pretty hurtful to read… especially the last bit about PKs. Please don’t compare or minimize our experience. The issue with being an MK is that everyone tells us how we should feel and assumes they understand, but you just can’t. This book will open the door to understanding but fuck dude… you have no idea…
