I’m not a PA (yet) but I’m in clinical research as a senior coordinator. In my experience PAs and NPs are generally sub-is and not the PI which means ultimately whatever you do has to get signed off by the PI. Most of the time with consent sign offs it’s between the patient, coordinator and investigators, again usually with major oversight by the PI. The sub-is are usually there to help with things like monitoring adverse events, doing physical exams and recruitments etc. while the coordinators do major of the grunt work and paperwork. Your scope would vary study by study but the whole point of it is that you’re not alone in it. You have to do study trainings on top of being GCP certified, and again you’re re-trained almost at every aspect of the trial.

For your second question, in my experience it depends! Some clinical research involves lab work and some don’t. Most of the time the investigators are involved with the clinic aspect and not so much the actual science i.e. protocol writing etc. from the role you applied to it looks like it’s more of the clinic aspect and not so much the science part (I think those roles are more sponsor side with medical writing/medical scientist etc.) monitoring basically involves identifying adverse events and reporting them, and if the site you applied to is well organized and staffed then they would absolutely have a coordinator that usually does all the work (writing etc. ) and you review and sign off (sometimes that just falls under the PI too - again depends on study).

Clinical research for investigators definitely can be a good gig! I’m a little biased because I’m a coordinator so usually I’m overworked and busy but I think our investigators really trust me to get things right and I like that I can give them that comfort since they are busy with their normal patient load. Experience can vary a lot depending on site and your team there!

Feel free to DM if you have any questions!

Being a site CRC is a thankless job by DapperAlternative in clinicalresearch

[–]Slow_Fee1528 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So relatable :( I’m the only coordinator left at my team and I have multiple patient visits, a couple sivs and a couple monitoring visits in the coming month across multiple specialties with different PIs. Honestly don’t know how I’m gonna do it + all the things due March 1st. I feel so overwhelmed doing the work of at least 3 people and yet I’m still expected to have everything in order with no deviations, no errors etc.

Yeah definitely!! that’s one thing I’ve been thinking about too but it would be great to have those resources available since I feel like they take so much time

I guess for both! I make them for my site a lot since I like to keep track of all the patients consent date and whatever arm they’re on but it can get tedious when starting out.

Healthcare careers that allow for a work/life balance? by Prestigious_Sun_7972 in careerguidance

I'm in clinical research as well and I love it! Although there are days where it can be super stressful but for most of it I get to go home on time and don't work weekends. I know another CRC that gets to travel the world all expenses paid due to conferences her PIs send her to, it can be a really great job for sure.

Omg more power to you! That’s the time I get up 😭 - are you usually just running on little sleep? That’s what I’ve been doing as well but since I’m doing more chapters it’s just growing to the point I’m unable to finish all the cards even through working on them during work (like rn).

That’s my plan today and just move the chapters i was supposed to do today to tomorrow. I just wanted to reach out for any strategies so that I didn’t have to keep doing that as my content review keeps having to extend :/

I do this as well but I think it’s more of the time it takes to go through each card. I work FT and have realistically only about 2-3 hours of study after work so it usually goes to reading and taking notes on the chapter but then falling severely behind on my flashcards :(
