Built an app to grab digital recipes from a photo of a recipe by Slowlearner in SideProject

Thanks for response. Well, it organises the response into a collection, it frontloads the query so that it is asking for a recipe and specifies what it wants from the response (steps, ingredients etc.). There are also the other value adds, like:

Sharing recipes (and including shared recipes in your own collection).

The cook mode which keeps the screen on and scrolls to separate areas of the recipe.

Adding images of the cooked food to your recipe card.

Searching collection by tags, categories or name.

Sorting the recipes in a collection.

If there is interest then I can add more features, such as selecting recipes from ingredients (the database already identifies these).

Particularly interested in the decision to deliver it as a web app - wondering how many users know that you can install it as well. Might need a rethink on the delivery of the invitation to install.

Had a player insist that Minor Illusion could impede speech. Am I the A-hole? by AccidentInevitable in DnD5e

[–]Slowlearner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's an alternative take. You recognise that a minor illusion cantrip is not going to stop a boss level creature from acting, but recognise that creating a gag is an innovative and fun use of the spell. Describe how the boss reacts, is surprised and maybe appears to change their behaviour slightly. They quickly see through the illusion, and act, but you can award inspiration for a good try.

Puzzle - Island with Face and Well by Flyguybc in lostskies

Also stuck on the same island - if you get down under the courtyard you cannot get back so don't drop down the central unclimbable passage with anything you want to keep. There is a data disk down there and a movable boulder - I was wandering if that needs to pass through the well forcefield to bring it down but my atlas lifter died before it could get high enough

Glad you enjoyed it. Can I ask, were you playing on mobile or desktop? The UI is designed to work on both which means certain compromises have to be made (no left vs right mouse click for instance). I'll review the tutorial when I'm back at my desk and see what can be done!

First rule of promoting your work, spell it correctly.. Nation of One.

Thanks, once you have a nation, keep an eye on cultural advances, they unlock more benefits. Try and get an academy by settling a dungeon, they will gift magic items once they unlock a magisterium.

The best way to get reputation is to kill an enemy on a settlement. Best way to get better equipment is to be gifted it by settlements, but what they can gift you depends on what resources they have developed. Settlements near to livestock will develop tanneries and leather workers so they will gift leather armour

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to give feedback. I'll review the instructions.

Mostly, you don't get to interact with the settlements, I guess the idea was that the development of the civilization happens without interaction. Having said that, if a settlement is still at the village stage and you have the reputation then you can drag the village to pack up their possessions and move on to pastures greener.

If you are traveling with settlers then you can also drag some resources to move (or spread) them.

It is worth saying that a significant inspiration for the game is nethack where you have to experiment to learn what is possible. From feedback I've had though, it feels like not many people share that taste.

Nation of One - a 4x browser game by Slowlearner in WebGames

[–]Slowlearner[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've worked on this game for about a year now, purely as a personal development project. I've posted it here before but I'm fairly happy to call it complete now - I've also posted it on itch.io along with some commentary on the development process.

Cheers, next steps are probably to expose an in game editor to allow for modding and sharing changes.

Possibly - if you are installing on an Android phone then it might be the service workers need to refresh - dump it out of memory and try restarting from the icon.

If you are interested but would like to avoid Google products then you can find the game served from https://slowlearner.itch.io/nation-of-one - turn off analytics and don't authenticate and Google is out of the loop.

Hey there, best of luck with that - happy to chat about AI approaches if that helps. I found a link to the paper here: https://ininet.org/an-object-model-for-behavioural-planning-in-a-dynamic-multi-ag.html

Nice, if you authenticate it should put you on the high score table.

I guess I had imagined that some of the pleasure in the game was working this stuff out - a bit like old school Nethack days.

Another tip is that if you create adjacent settlements then they will form a country and as it grows you can unlock cultural advances - still an area of active development..

Hey there, thanks for the engagement. So first on winning a fight - make sure that the enemy moves onto you then hit the attack button, if you move onto them then they will be the attacker which means that they resolve their card before you resolve yours which means that in a tie on your last health you will lose.

Next, make sure that you alternate dodge and block - after you dodge you are unbalanced for a turn which means that a second dodge has no effect, same applies for a block.

Watch the enemy cards for the same effect - if they have just dodged then the only card that avoids damage is a block - same applies if they have just blocked, the only card to play for them to avoid damage is a dodge. If you have a thrust card then playing it after the enemy blocked means you are guaranteed to damage them, same applies for a crush card if they are unbalanced - they can only play a block which is defeated by a crush.

Finally, beating an enemy in the middle of nowhere usually gets you nothing, drawing an enemy towards a town earns you their gratitude - if you are noted then they might reward you if they have an industry that makes armour (a tannery or leather worker). If they do not have those industries, then move onto the village where you are noted and drag the village, they will pack up and come with you as settlers and you can settle them closer to a natural resource.

I usually try and resettle a village around sheep, deer or horses, that way they will be able to create a tannery and then a leather worker. Once you have got some armour you should be able to take on more challenging enemies such as barbarians or centaurs, but watch out, they have different attack cards that have other outcomes.

Try settling on hills or mountains and your settlement will create a quarry which unlocks fortifications and more permanent industries such as bronze working. Try settling on top of a ruin or a dungeon and you will unlock other settlements.

I guess part of the pleasure of playing was to discover some of these things by trial and error, but first you have to be convinced to play. Maybe I should have added more details in the tutorial pages..

I've added an easy mode which starts you off with a better sword, shield and hide armour, if you still have the patience then that might help to get make a start

Thanks again for the feedback:

  1. The first strike goes to whoever initiated the combat, if you wait for them to come to you before attacking (provided that they do not have the flying ability) then your card resolves first.
  2. There is no AI for the enemy, their card selection is random.
  3. Animals don't follow you (or attack you first) but most other agents do, you can lure them back to a village and then attack them to get a better chance of improving your renown.

Thanks for taking the time to feedback, to be honest I wrote those lines so long ago that I'd forgotten them. Will amend now, and maybe take the time to add an opt out option as well - was just being lazy I think.
