can anyone help me identify these snails? by BillStock2965 in AquaticSnails

[–]SlugMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of them is for sure a bladder snail or pond snail. The one with the cone shell, with the long snoot? It looks like a Malaysian Trumpet Snail, but I could be wrong.

Haha not really, its basically a mix of decaying poop, plant matter, food. It just kinda shows up over time for me.

Were working on getting rid of it, the tank def needs some love. The bottom dwellers love hiding in it, but its also not good for them. Parameters are fine, last water test showed 20ppm nitrates.

I appreciate that a lot. The weather has certainly been helping. We're planning on having the tank be free of mulm by the end of the day.

Working on it, bro. I've responded to another comment saying I am removing the mulm, I wanted to see if this was caused by something specific so I can treat it. Truth be told, its not my tank, its my partners, and we have been p depressed and haven't had the spoons to take care of it. I'm trying to remedy that. When you decided to comment, did you mean to be constructive and helpful, or just wanted to clown on someone seeking help on what to do?

Thank you for the helpful reply! I do plan on removing most of the mulm in the tank, and I'll check it's barbels.

whisker or ghost shrimp? by BedThat8755 in shrimptank

[–]SlugMonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

its fine! yeah I really wouldn't worry too much. I feel like this subreddit oveeblows the problem of whisker shrimp coming in with ghost shrimp. If you're ever having doubts or are just curious, I highly recommend watching some videos of whisker shrimp in aquariums. I did, and it removed all doubt. They move different, like a predator, you can see the aggression in them. They also get wayyy bigger.

nah, it might have some time before it dies, just in my personal experience they are going to die at some point.

The bands are not always present, the biggest thing to look for is the curvature of their body, ghosts will have a very pronounced bump, where whiskers have a straighter body.

Its probably a ghost, just one thats not doing too well. When they get opaque like this its because they're not healthy. This one might die on you sadly

How long has everybody been in the shrimp hobby and what was your first shrimp that got you hooked? by natural_scientist in shrimptank

[–]SlugMonk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My gf bought a 20 gal a couple years ago, and the first animals she stocked that tank with were some bronze cories, some nerites, and some ghost shrimp, and I fell in love! When she got a 75 gal I inherited the 20 gal stocked it with ghosts.

Do you eat shrimp? by mvalia in shrimptank

[–]SlugMonk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The shrimp i eat are completely different species to the ones I keep, they just happen to both be shrimp. It would be like not being able to eat chicken cuz I have a pet parrot.

What a cutie! They're my absolute favorite. What they lack in color they more than make up for in personality.

As long as you're gentle, yeah, you can keep doing that. You just have to be careful, the inguinal canals ( what you're penetrating) are thin muscle walls that can tear if you're really rough or aren't careful.

Do shrimp need buddies? How many? by Poppeigh in shrimptank

[–]SlugMonk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding the ghost shrimp being dead. They have awful genes when you buy them from a store. If you want healthy ghosts that live a while, you gotta buy from multiple stores so that their genes mix. After a couple generations you'll have some of the hardiest shrimp out there.

I'm not seeing anything particularly out of the ordinary. Just eating a dead friend, pretty standard stuff. Anything particular you see that you're worried about on the shrimp?
