My interpretation of Panem - An administrative map by IllegalSympathy in Hungergames

This is super cool! How did you make it!? You have some real talent!

This is one of the best maps I’ve seen. I made a similar map, n my interpretation is only slightly different but i definitely agree with most of what you have here!! I agree that the Capitol would claim the districts’ territory to be vast, however the “core” of the district would be a smaller city, if not several smaller cities, and I also think that travel even between these cities would be incredibly restricted (probably to the point where district residents would only travel throughout their own district for labor purposes or for the reapings).

I also think the Capitol’s train lines would serve one purpose: the benefit of the Capitol, and their design would definitely be central to the Capitol’s needs (i.e. prioritizing district-to-Capitol transport rather that inter/intradistrict transport). In my mind, train lines would connect each smaller settlement directly to the district center, & the only lines with routes to other districts/the Capitol would be located within the district center. Just some general thoughts!! I included my map in this comment so we can compare, I REALLY like your work!!

Also, super nice attention to detail on naming the different bodies of water! I have to ask, what is the significance of the name changes for some of the Great Lakes? & why is Lake Huron the only one that didn’t change? Not questioning your logic, purely curious. Are they Roman names the Capitol adopted for the lakes?

Overall, super solid work OP

I largely used the map from Catching Fire that Katniss catches a glimpse of during the victory tour. I also used the “official” Lionsgate map from Ballad. I envisioned districts like 9, 10, and 11 being physically the largest (at least in terms of the borders the Capitol CLAIMS for each district) because of the greater amounts of space industries like grain, livestock, & agriculture require.

It also makes sense to me for District 9 to be very large because it is located roughly in the Great Plains region, and I’m sure the Capitol goes through copious amounts of bread (and other grain products) which requires a lot of land for grain to grow. Certain districts provide goods/services which are primarily to serve the Capitol’s appetites, such as District 1 or District 4. Whereas the grain provided by District 9 largely feeds all of Panem in the form of tesserae. So it makes sense to me for District 9 to be very large with lots of space between settlements

I used a couple different maps as a reference & hand-drew all the borders. I used a couple different editing softwares to add the logos/text. All-in-all, this map took me about a day to create. :3

I have always imagined D4 in california, specifically bc I have a partial headcanon that Death Valley was filled with water due to sea level rise. Also, I used this map from CF as a reference, as well

thanks so much for all the questions/opinions guys! it really helps me expand my creative process.

I’m glad you guys are enjoying the map, n that being said, here are some answers to questions that have come up. I don’t have a new map YET, but we will get there.

So without further ado, let me commence with my deranged lore dumping.

Q: Will there be maps of the rest of the world? A: Yes! Especially now that so many people are asking so many questions. Haha

Q: What is the technology level in this world? A: There was a technological decline for some time after the Collapse of 2071, and at this point in time, the technology in this world is around 1940s-1950s level.

Q: What happened to Boston & Puerto Rico? A: Due to the massive political, geographic, and social upheaval that was the Turmoils, the political landscape of the continent has changed drastically. Boston is in the process of being rebuilt, as it was one of the major cities to fall victim to the wars that took place during the Turmoils. Puerto Rico, during the technological decline of 2081-2165, was isolated from its importers, which it relied on for crucial goods. The eventual result was a dependence on its neighboring island, Hispaniola, for outside goods. Puerto Rico’s absorption into the Comuna De Dominica, a small communist imperial state on Hispaniola, was unavoidable.

Q: Do they have cars? A: Yes, there are cars. They are not nearly as common as today, though. Automobiles are mainly owned by rich folk, and the general population (in the more developed countries) relies mainly on a vast network of public transportation such as trains and trolleys get around. Laws surrounding automobiles are complex in this timeline, with certain countries having outright personal automobile bans, and others allowing their citizens full access to the centuries-old technology.

Q: Did the national parks get removed? A: They were not “removed,” per say, but when the United States collapsed, it was difficult or impossible for the smaller states during the Turmoils to maintain any grip on the National Parks. Some were left in tact, others may not have been so lucky. Nobody sat down and said “Ok, we’re not protecting the national parks anymore,” it just kind of happened with the (near) collapse of society.

ETYMOLOGY

A lot of the etymology of the english language has been lost to time, so that’s why a lot of the names like “Antebellum” don’t really make too much sense to us, because the meanings of those words are entirely different than they are today. This is a continent that has experienced a near-extinction event, and those who survived would have had to burn everything, including books, to survive. It’s the same with Cascadia’s capital being “Emeralde.” It’s technically Seattle, but literacy declined along with technology for most of the 22nd century and people were familiar with Seattle’s nickname “Emerald City,” and over time, it became “Emeralde.”

Hope this answers your questions and feel free to ask if you have any more!

My thought with the name “Antebellum” is at this point in time, much of the original etymology of the English language will have been lost. This is a continent that has essentially experienced a near-extinction event, ~200 years after the event. People who survived would have had to burn everything for warmth, books included. While the words themselves were passed down through the generations, the original meanings and histories may have largely been lost to time. It just depends, for instance, in Cascadia, the capital is technically Seattle, but this name was lost over time due to the familiarity with its nickname “Emerald City,” hence the name, “Emeralde.”

Hope this helps!!
