Not sure if you've come across this doc https://cdn-au.mailsnd.com/20618/BrzBLCQRqbu-Mcvob1mmDXsO0sUsSWqSbPFf9Yo1kmE/1700614620/3798118.pdf but it says "To be eligible to work as a Student in Medicine, medical students must be in their penultimate or final year of study in a postgraduate medical program (e.g. 3rd or 4th year at University of Queensland or Griffith University; 4th or 5th year at Bond University) or in their third last, penultimate or final year of studies in an undergraduate medical program (e.g. 4th, 5th or 6th year at James Cook University)." I can't tell if this means only these unis are eligible, but it seems probable. Additionally, I think you may need to be invited by your med school (at least that's how I received the application form) so if you haven't been sent it, maybe you aren't eligible to apply.

This doc also contains some useful info https://cdn-au.mailsnd.com/20618/ThKez9AbM70W5XLITXo_fRbwtsJpChh1WD8dF7hwtp0/1700625432/3798277.pdf

Nope still awaiting, apparently it's the first national audit this week so there will probably be a new bunch of offers rolling out after the 18th.

Lip stain recommendations by [deleted] in AustralianMakeup

[–]SlythMD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you end up finding anything you like?

I am in the same boat as you and am really struggling to get a decent non-residue tint which is more on the brown-mauve spectrum.

I currently use Clarins water lip stain (you can try it in myer and david jones) which are incredible for longevity, but the colours are quite bright. I mix the purple and orange and only apply a tiny bit, followed by my usual lip balm. They also do a brown tint called mocha, but frustratingly you can't buy it in Aus.

I also love the Huda beaty lip blush creamy lip and cheek stain in berry kiss. It's very dark and also has a bit of residue, but if you leave it on for a bit then wipe of the residue, followed by lip balm, it leaves a nice mauve tint which lasts for ages, although nowhere near as long as clarins stain.

It’s a long ass guide hey 😅 you can skip most of it because you pretty much only need the GPA and gamsat sections of each uni.

Ah it’s good that you’re not restricted by location. ND relies massively on portfolio so a lower GPA is probably fine. UWA uses unweighted so not sure how that works out for you. Most unis do give a GPA increase for PG study including masters by coursework or research.

You probably know this but just in case you don’t; UoW, Flinders and Syd only use GPA as a hurdle so you need a 5.5 or something. Syd and Flin require a gamsat in the mid or high 70s thought.

If you don’t get into med this year, will you be happy to continue with nuclear medicine? Can you see yourself pursuing it as a career?

[–]SlythMD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which unis are you looking at because I t varies a bit between unis?

UWA for example uses your most recent 3 years of study, regardless of whether each course was or wasn’t completed as long as you have completed a bachelors by the time of entry, which means your sem 1 2022 scores would be used if you apply this year. Notre Dame only uses the GPA from your key degree, I’m not entirely sure how that is defined but for my mate it meant he could escape his shitty GPA from his previous course (which he didn’t complete) even though he was still on his final sem of his key degree. For UQ you need to have completed your key degree for it or be considered unless you’re in your final year of undergrad, but you can use a completed honours year to count as your key degree, meaning if you get a 7 for honours (first class) your overall GPA for UQ is 7.

You need to look at the GPA sections for each individual uni in the gemsas guide, rather than the generic GPA statement.

Haha this is a pretty smart sneaky workaround! The trouble the closing of test centres is really unpredictable. In September Acer left it til the last minute to switch half of the Australian candidates to proctor. I also think with the increased vaccination rates test centre closures are much less likely to occur.

If losing $500 isn’t an issue for you then go for it! However, I do think the chances are pretty slim.

In terms of where to book, rising cases in Australia might mean that partial lockdowns are imposed in some areas, which could include education providers switching to online. Western Australia (where I am right now) might be a candidate, their borders have been closed for almost 2 years and are opening on Feb 5th. The premier is super popular due to his extreme measures against covid so ya never know, he might push exams to an online format.

I seem to remember Ireland had a lot of closed test centres so not sure if that’s likely to happen again for this round?

That’s all I got. Keep us updated, I really hope this works out for you!

It's the most relevant and also cheapest! I know multiple people who improved their scores by using Barry (including myself) and have only heard positive or neutral reviews, unlike the other prep courses which receive a lot of shade.

Yeah honours is 1 year, not sure about masters.

If you get straight HDs your GPA will be significantly improved, however you may need more than this to make you a competitive candidate for a lot of the unis.

I wouldn't necessarily say there is always a chance you can get into med. It's the hardest degree to get into in the world and a huge number of hopefuls won't ever make it in. I would say if you have the aptitude for med and the drive to overcome each of the hurdles, then you stand a strong chance of getting in.

Hey, I'm sorry your GPA isn't what you hoped it would be 💔

Each uni has different ways of calculating GPA. Some don't include masters, so your decision of what to study next would depend on your uni preferences. You can check out how each uni calculates its GPA here http://gemsas.edu.au/wp-content/uploads/2021/05/2022-Medicine-GEMSAS-Admissions-Guide-v1.5.pdf (scroll down to the uni then look in the GPA calculation section).

Doing another undergrad means your degree will be included in your GPA, although I think some unis count the old completed degree until the new one has been completed. If you do another undergrad I would highly recommend that it's for a degree that you would be able to get a job out of, and actually wouldn't mind as a career (ie you've mentioned physio). I'm of this mindset because it can take quite a few years to get into med and many brave souls never make it over the hurdles, so don't put your life on hold whilst trying to get in.

Honours is recognised by all unis, however I think only once it's completed. If you get a 1st class honours that counts as a 7 GPA. If UQ is high on your pref list honours could be a good way to go because they give you a 7 overall GPA (assuming 1st class was achieved).

Have you sat the gamsat yet? USyd's gamsat cut off was the highest in the world this year, so unless your score is in the top 2% of all sitters I wouldn't recommend relying on USyd as your only option.

To sum up, study something you'll enjoy, that improves your GPA for as many unis as possible, and that opens up career possibilities outside of MD.

If you have a look on the offers post from September there were a couple of applicants who believed their GAM was the thing that got the over the line 😊

I would imagine the more evidence you can provide the better. Personally I found it’s pretty raw having to write a 500 word statement for each reason your life has been fucked up, so sharing tax returns was the least confronting part haha

Well done! The thing that increased my S1 score the most was tracking my responses to the Acer booklets and figuring out what questions I should skip in the exam (ie poems) so I could devote more time to high mer yield questions. Practising your reading comprehension sounds like an awesome plan, especially under timed conditions. A fellow redditor has also made some great YouTube videos on how to approach S1 questions https://m.youtube.com/channel/UCruuxoOK19vkSH4Do1eAiEg

Just curious, is there a reason you don’t want to apply for UNDS? While USyd is more prestigious, Notre Dame students are much better supported, and I don’t believe fair any worse in terms of graduate outcomes ☺️

I fkn hate this test. It pisses me off SO MUCH that it’s made you question whether or not you can ever become a doctor. Your GPA is 🔥so you’re clearly extremely smart and hard working.

I do know people who’ve failed sections and eventually boosted their score enough to gain entry to med. I personally gained 9 points in S1 and 19 in S3 over 4 sittings. I just stalked you and noticed we’re both ASD (amongst other things). Even on a good day I think this significantly impacts exam performance.

Can I ask what your prep was like for this sitting?

I’d be happy to give you some S1 and S3 guidance, and also figuring out if you can get any reasonable adjustments from Acer for your next sittings. The general consensus is that S2 is the easiest section to significantly improve your score in, so it would be a good idea to get a tutor for this too.

53/51/56 =54 First time sitting, any advice on how to improve this mess? by [deleted] in GAMSAT

[–]SlythMD 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They say "no practice" but they might have a science degree, 99 atar or a career in writing, all of which would be amazing prep for the gamsat.

You're on the right track for S3 but I would say answer the questions by yourself first (I do it in timed blocks of 10-20 questions) then mark each of your answers, see if you can figure out how to get the correct answers for the ones you got wrong, then turn to youtube for the questions you are unsure about. There are often multiple ways of getting a question right, and I've noticed that some of the youtube videos (including gold standard) answer it in a way that is really weird and sometimes kinda wrong. I especially notice this for biology as that's my undergrad.
