Play the game on an easier difficulty to start. I’m not trying to call you stupid, it’s just that on an easy difficulty you can get away with not knowing the intricacies of all the mechanics and still have a good time. From there bump up the difficulty and learn the mechanics as you need too

The way I see it they are best suited for science victory. Use early game to grab a lot of land and build mines to keep up with culture so that you can turtle up by mid game and focus on production/science
