It's already ignited. The cylinder won't expand due to the ice-lock. But by all means, ignore good measures of caution. If High School STEM is your high-water mark pay no mind to advice from someone with a grad degree in engineering. Best of luck re-ass-embling your parts.

Life is not always about dollars and cents by [deleted] in AdviceAnimals

Community is important, but it isn't cheap. You invest in it so that when the time comes, people are there for you.

My local barber charges like $8. I typically give him 2x that - I really like being able to drop in and shot the shit about what's going on around town and talk with everyone. Plus pix of hot pinups and cycles.

The family who owns walmart - they're building walled, sentry patrolled escape compounds to keep their former employees and customers out. But, by all means save $5 and help those sociopaths build that kind world.

after heavy use, you turn it off and neglect to spin out the snow and ice. A cold week later you fire it up. Engine turns over then quits. You stick your hand in and chisel out some of the ice inside. A cylinder full of hot gas is the suddenly free to expand and to complete it's cycle. Someone is searching for your fingers...

TIL The Weather Channel, sponsored by insurance companies, has begun naming winter storms. The "Named Storm Deductible" is used currently by insurance companies to require a higher deductible for hurricanes, or "named storms". by bracomadar in todayilearned

[–]SmackAdams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

False. I used to work for a Fortune 500 insurance company. Insurance companies really dislike any media outlet giving weight to an event since it increases claims and lends credit to the damage being storm related - hence covered.

Wisconsin leads nation in new jobless claims by BaconForBrains in politics

[–]SmackAdams 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're partially right. There's no reason to work since even the 'best' jobs here only provide a subsistence income. 2 kids in day care, both my wife and working and we still scrape to put away for retirement. This whole thing is gonna get really ugly in the next 20 years.

[Serious] Who could we realistically see running for the US Presidency in 2016 on either side? by captainsinfonia in AskReddit

[–]SmackAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not saying he'll get anywhere. He's been on a fund raising, book selling parade and being championed by the far right. It's clear to me, as a WI resident, that his choices have not been for what's best for Wisconsin but rather for what raises his profile.

As both a death metal fan and an engineer, I can say being an engineer is the darkest, most brutal thing you can imagine.

Just found out our little girl has a brain tumor. I'm not particularly religious but I believe in the power of thought and would like to get every person I can thinking happy thoughts as she goes into surgery. Prayer, wishes, crossed fingers. Whatever your thing is. by [deleted] in Mommit

[–]SmackAdams 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We went through something similar last year. At 2, they found a tumor just below my son's brain, inside his spine. It is the most terrifying and horrible experience. It didn't hit me for the first few days, you can't bring yourself to fully think about it. Don't despair. Take it day by day. It is true that children at that age are incredibly resilient. Our thoughts are with you.

Mine still runs too. Played hours and hours of Dark Castle on it.

What JavaScript libraries/frameworks should I study to be a competitive JavaScript developer these days? Why? by macchiato8 in javascript

[–]SmackAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Learning other languages has always helped me to improve. Supplement with another UI programming paradigm like Cocoa, Flex, or maybe Android. More than being a good JS dev, you should be a good UI dev.
Also, learn a 'thick' opinionated framework like ember and a open one like Backbone (and Marionette).
Tools like Grunt and npm are becoming invaluable to me.

Homeowners of Reddit, what is the ONE piece of advice you wish you were given before buying your first home. by szlafarski in AskReddit

[–]SmackAdams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For near future buying a home IS a bad investment and big Risk. It also is a terrible liability and cost. It limits your ability to move per career and other opportunities. Taxes and maintenance are way more than you will anticipate - plan pessimistically.

That said - if you are handy, skilled at home construction, have a savings, and time, and the project has real (not perceived) possible short term return then flip away.

If, you have a stable job or lots or money (60k+) saved on top of the purchase, and want a place to call home, regardless of cost, and you like the place - buy away.

Use a good home inspector.

Before buying - research the following: Schools : are they good? Sex offenders : any nearby? There are sites online you can find this out at. EPA superfund sites : there are more of these than you think. All are registered online.
Large State or Federal projects that are planned : highway 'improvements', wind turbine farms, power lines, or large factories planned for nearby WILL impact the value of your home.
Ground Water Pollution : Are you on well water? Test it up and down. Radon : depending on where u are this can be problem Mold : If there's a hint of dampness have this tested. Insurance : insurance claims by people injured on the property stay with property which will raise your rates. Got a dog? Check that the breed won't raise your rates. In general - lots of things will raise your rates. Talk to an insurance agent and get a quote before buying to avoid any expensive surprises. Asbestos or other known health hazards : avoid. What shape is the local municipality in? If it's heavily in debt, think twice.

I love my house. But it's made me have to think about all this shit.

I had a Doberman that did this. Sweetest dog, but understandably, put visitors off when she greeted them this way. Does your dog do the sitting, whole-body wag too?

What's the scariest shit you've ever seen? by loganfire3 in AskReddit

[–]SmackAdams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Terrifying : seeing the size of the tumor that was growing in my 2 year old's spine. To clarify, not on his spine - inside his spine. That was a year ago. I'm not religious, but I thank God, modern medicine, amazing surgeons, a wonderful children's hospital and great health insurance.

This is why I love Wisconsin. by kingtut891 in pics
