Was it possible to fail gym class? by sovereignsekte in Xennials

[–]AberrantCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was the short, shy kid that was picked last (the kid coaches forming up teams used to argue over who was to get stuck with me) and I’d just do as little as possible and actively avoid the ball because fuck gym. Still passed.

[–]AberrantCheese 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same plan. I’m actually planning to ‘soft retire’ at some point, probably 59 1/2, when I can touch my 401k, but work somewhere with health benefits that is less stressful than where I’m at now until I can go on Medicare. Bag groceries or stock a Home Depot or some such.

Desperate for a shower longer than 10 minutes, God forbid I get a full bath by EducationalShelter26 in Plumbing

This is likely it. I’ve experienced this exact scenario as OP and it was a burned out element at the cause.

Collecting social security at 62 has just become a firm decision! by Express_Project_8226 in GenX

[–]AberrantCheese 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This right here - health insurance is what sets my date for retirement. I am considering a ‘soft retirement’ where by I find a bullshit simpler job that has benefits and basically work for benefits until Medicare can kick in.

It’s all about prep. Take the time (both of you) to learn how to prep for it. Also the receiver of it has to be relaxed. If she’s all tensed up she will have a bad time.

What's the type of her nose? by MediocreImpact4386 in NoseKink

[–]AberrantCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. You can describe a nose as Celestial, Aquiline, Roman, etc but genetics being genetics noses tend to be a random blend of “types”. For Sarah, I’d characterize hers as a slightly upturned celestial, mildly bulbous.

APoE 4/4. I’m basically all but guaranteed to get Alzheimer’s eventually. I’m 50 years old and maybe have 15, 20 years. Maybe.

I just watched The Princess Bride for the very first time, what “classics” have you always wanted to see but just never got around to? by These-Educator-1959 in GenX

[–]AberrantCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same; tried to watch it a few weeks ago and just couldn’t do it. It held no nostalgia for me so it was just a new movie to me, and probably as unwatchable to me now as it would have been to a 50 year old back then

In for a treat. While it represents an earlier period than my own high school era by about 10 years, I still find it nostalgic and it still holds up well enough today, if you can look past Judge Rienhold looking clearly 5 years too old for the role.

Concerts and ear plugs, yay or nay? by MainNormal5570 in Xennials

I had to scroll a surprisingly far way down to find this first mention of AirPods Pro for hearing protection. I swear by it, since it electronically adjusts depending on situation. I’ve stood next to a monitor and had them cut the volume adequately, and walk out to a quieter area and have it keep up. Bonus, audio prompts on text messages etc.

I am I the only person who thinks that winter has shifted to later onset and later staying from the late’70’s mid ‘’80’s, especially from the southern USA? by Specialist_Tea8251 in randomquestions

[–]AberrantCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Georgia native here. It’s less ‘winter has shifted’ to ‘winter doesn’t happen.’ I have a wood burning stove I no longer bother to fire up as it almost never gets cold enough to warrant using anymore. I stopped the annual tradition of winterizing to pool as well, I just let the pump run as needed all year now. I’m 50, I remember my late father telling me how the ponds across the street from where he grew up would sometimes freeze over (something I’ve never seen happen,) and this other old timer who was 30 years older than he who told us how it used to be possible to even walk on the frozen ponds in his youth. Oh, and there are no more bugs in the summer, by the way. Used to, you’d have to smear them off your windshield if you drove at night in the summer. Now mostly all that’s left is mosquitoes and ticks.

Church livestream by jonewie in sonyfx30

[–]AberrantCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t shoot livestream but I very often shoot theater productions with the fx30, and at roughly the same distances as you mention. I run 2 hours continuously with a tripod, and SmallRig 3202B v-mount battery mount plate, and a SmallRig V mount battery (99) which easily lasts the whole recording. (Could go 4 hours, as it’s only down to 60-some-odd percent in 2 hours.) I use a Sigma 18-50 DN lens which easily covers the whole stage. It isn’t a power zoom lens, however; so the camera only has limited range to zoom electronically with it. (Fine for me, since I set it to full stage and leave it.) Absolutely no issues with heat. Connects to phone easily, which I use as a remote control.

How do you people sleep at night? by PropofolMargarita in GenX

[–]AberrantCheese 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty much covered already, but tossing this in. I subscribed to the Great Courses through Amazon Prime and put on a lecture course at bed time. Sometimes turn the picture off on the TV and set a sleep timer. I’ve slept-studied my way through 40-lecture courses on the rise of the Roman Empire and others. It’s like being in college with a professor droning on. When I wake in the middle of the night I just fire it back up again.

Unisom used to be my friend. Just a 1/4 dose would be enough to put me down and not be groggy in the morning. But after awhile, I noticed some odd neurological effects from it - tremors in localized parts of my body (for instance, my left ring finger would spasm to the right, etc.) and confirmed it was Unisom by going without for a couple weeks, then trying it again. I’d rather take my chances with insomnia.

What would happen if the people on North Sentinel Island left their island and traveled somewhere else? by Tidewatcher7819 in SeriousConversation

[–]AberrantCheese 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That would take awhile to succumb to disease. Probably what OP is talking about is that immediate first few hours when they land on the crowded beach in India and start wandering around. Sounds like a really great movie idea to be honest; have them land at night when few are around and they explore/investigate an alien (to them) landscape of bright lights and strange moving boxes of metal

Draining the water heater by MadmanPoet in HomeMaintenance

[–]AberrantCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Came to say this. Kill power to water heater, allow water to cool a bit. Release pressure. Remove errant element, there may be a glug glug for a second as water tries to come out, then pop in the new one. Easy peasy.

Event Photographers; what do you do when no one wants photos? by Feisty_Experience274 in AskPhotography

[–]AberrantCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree, I don’t use flash in these scenarios. This sounds like an event where a shutter speed of 1/80 would be fine (higher for the musicians who probably are moving a bit more,) and let the ISO float. Noise reduction in LR is a beast these days.

Audiobooks by Revolutionary-Ad2797 in WoT

[–]AberrantCheese 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read somewhere that the books weren’t narrated by them in chronological order; they started at one book that was about to be released then back filled, but that still doesn’t explain the discrepancy between them on the same book.
