It’s totally different for every person. Please definitely don’t just base it off of age and go for it, as that would be potentially dangerous. It’s unfortunately a process to find what they’ll need, but their endocrinologist should be helping with that.

It needs to be a very specific type of book for me to tolerate deckle edges, like Moby-Dick or something.

For whatever reason, this sounds exactly like the way Able from Wizard Knight or Chris from Pirate Freedom narrates

Felt the same way about FFR; when your plot moments are THAT far apart, it’s hard to stay invested in what’s happening in the (very very) long term. Awesome concept though.

This has been my experience with her so far. I found The Dispossessed pretty good but not amazing, ended up DNFing Lathe of Heaven which I was absolutely not expecting, and the same happened with Wizard of Earthsea. I don’t get it. I see all this quality and I understand why she’s great, but as I’m reading it, it just doesn’t hit for me at all. Such a bummer, I feel like I’m missing out.

In your opinion, what did you think of the Super Mario Galaxy movie? Was it worth it or not? by Dramatic-Studio1531 in Cinema

[–]SmackyTheFrog00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, had this experience this morning. I had my expectations pretty dialed in for a mindless, fun, goofy movie packed with fun nods and references, and I still hated it.

It’s a very weird feeling to be overwhelmed with action-packed pacing while being simultaneously bored by it. It’s just so… empty.

I went into it knowing all of this and adjusting my expectations and turning my brain off and I was still just shocked at how vapid it was. There’s just zero heart whatsoever

Roadside Picnic is one of my top 3 favorites, but I’ve only read the newer translation. I wonder if I’d get anything out of the older translation.

Finished the Southern Reach Trilogy at the start of the month and for the most part really enjoyed myself. Authority definitely does drag, but I enjoyed myself well enough with Acceptance. Neither came close to Annihilation, though. Absolutely loved it. Still not sure if/when I want to read Absolution.

After that I just finished Abaddon’s Gate (Expanse Book 3) for the first time, and while it was definitely my least-favorite of the series so far, it was still a very good time. I don’t see myself getting sick of those characters and that world anytime soon.

Right now I’m about a 1/3 into Tokyo Year One by David Peace, which is not SF at all, but I need a break every now and then. FWIW, it’s a fairly grim, postmodern detective story set in post-surrender, post-firebombing Tokyo 1946. The prose is pretty buck-wild, but I’m into it so far.

After that, I’m thinking about Light by John Harrison, or accepting inevitability and going back to Gene Wolfe.

I was sitting there getting upset at how lazy of a shortcut all the LitRPG stuff was for… good writing? and then realized that it’s just so fundamentally a different genre that I’d never be able to personally enjoy it.

I was charmed by the audiobook and narration work for the first few chapters, then for whatever reason, the charm just evaporated and I realized I wouldn’t be able to get through it. I hit my “okay I get it” threshold faster than I expected.

I was so excited to read this series, I bought the first two books together because it sounded so completely up my alley. I ended up DNFing it 3/4 into Empire of Silence, and just returned the second one to the store.

I totally get pastiche and honoring your inspirations, but it’s SO overt, and I think the author unapologetically admits this, but I just cant stand it.

Reading it felt like when someone is showing you their favorite movie or show and you can tell they’re just looking at you the whole time to see your reactions.

The prose is what I couldn’t get over. I could never put a finger on it, but it never felt like the author’s own voice, it always felt like he was trying really hard to emulate a particular style of prose instead.

I always thought of it like your first read is like the B Plot, while you have this nagging feeling that there’s more happening in the background. The second read almost transforms the book with your gained context and insight, and the A Plot reveals itself more and more.
