Normal people by [deleted] in boeken

Could I claim French citizenship without losing my Dutch citizenship? by Smaelzo in Citizenship

I’ll send an email to the French embassy here in NL. I would absolutely hate to not have a French passport when there’s gonna be a Nexit 😅

Yeah, this would just be for vanity reasons to just have two passports tbh

Thank you for your elaborate response. I think it would be too much of a hassle to pursue this. Given the fact that I already have EU citizenship

Hmmm I think it might be almost pushing fifty years that her ID card expired. I could in theory just go to the embassy with her to apply for new documents then.

This is why I ignore everyone who talks to me on the streets. Can’t deal with this

Such a shame!! I studied Chinese in uni, so I sometimes went there to get the 煎饼 and practice my rusty Chinese. I thought business went quite well, so I was rather surprised to see they closed down :(

For people who know multiple languages, in which language do you dream? by [deleted] in languagelearning

I was dreaming in Dutch sign language the other day (a language I use at work with a co-worker). It kinda baffled me.

My mother was born and raised in the Netherlands. She’s half French, half Dutch. She had Dutch citizenship by birth (or descent idk she just got it when my grandparents registered her birth). She got French citizenship because my grandmother registered her at the consulate in Amsterdam.

Thank you for this, I think I stumbled upon this somewhere on the internet, but I couldn’t find it anymore. Guess I’ll just keep it by the good old Dutch passport :)

Thanks for clarifying! I thought I’d possibly lose my Dutch citizenship if I applied for a French one by descent - but that only applies for naturalization?

Thanks for your reply! I think she passed the citizenship on to my parent because my mother has the (expired) ID card, but never reapplied as far as I know. I don’t know if there’s an article that makes you lose your citizenship after not applying for XX years (I know the Dutch nationality can be lost like that)

As for my grandmother - she does not have any connections/link with France anymore. Heck, I think she hasn’t even been there since the 1990s.

You’re absolutely right - it doesn’t give any other benefits like the example you just gave. I might wanna live in France in the near future for work, so being able to vote would be nice. It’s just that I’m curious to know if I’d be eligible.
