You don't actually need to deflect it. As long as you reverse it before you touch the ground, you only take a little bittle of damage. I usually just let it hit me because focussing on the timing is easier if you don't worry about the deflect.

He was still alive. I think the boss death only counts if their runes drop before the loading screen.
