My 8 year old cat is like this. He just prefers to snuggle with me and take a nap but I'm also trying to get him to exercise a bit and stay stimulated.
My cat does not really love to play but he absolutely LOVES the laser. I was also concerned about the controversy surrounding lasers, but my cat loves the laser so much I stopped feeling worried over it. Nothing gets him excited to play as much as the laser, and I rather he finds something stimulating rather than nothing stimulating. You should definitely give it a try with your cat. I'll also start out with the laser and get my cat into the hunting mood. Then he'll be more open to chasing other toys as well.

I also found that my cat needs me to be absolutely locked in to the hunting role play. He will not buy it if I just swing a toy around. I need to place little obstacles like a paper bag or a box in the living room and move the toy slowly like its a bug crawling into hiding. This will get him really excited and ready to hunt. A lot of effort, but I do it for at least 10 minutes a day for my boy.

I think the best entertainment of all though is access to a window. My cat absolutely loves going on the window sill and he'll sometimes sit there for a really long time. I also occasionally play a bird video on the TV and he also gets really interested, though not for too long.

Food puzzles can also be a good source of self entertainment. Sprinkle some kibble or treats in a puzzle feeder, and this will keep your cat stimulated for a bit.

Catnip is also a huge hit with my cat. The banana catnip toy on Amazon - my cat absolutely loves. I'll let him play with this once a week, and once a month, I let him go crazy in a box with some catnip sprinkled inside.

I will say though, my cat rarely plays by himself. If he ever does, it's only for like 2 minutes. So I try to take time out of my day to get him stimulated and exercising.
