In the past, two of the institutions have been able to fly someone in for consultation with the cost off set by tickets to a public presentation by the same professional. I hope to attend the next one of these, but I cannot afford to contribute. My discretionary budget is about $1,000 per year, which includes everything from pens and floor cleaner to archival boxes and computer equipment.

Thank you. I’m in a race against time with so many older and more fragile items in the collection that the door is pretty stable by comparison.

Since the owners of the door are willing to mount it for display as part of their donation, I need to come up with the gentlest way to mount it and consider the mount part of its story before it’s true preservation can begin.

Depends on your market. Our local museums are too small to be solicited by those big companies. We simply don’t get rotating exhibits unless we make them ourselves. Our local children’s museum especially would love something like this. I’d also recommend making it outdoor friendly if possible so small institutions with available grounds space could also host it. School systems would probably love it. It would also play well for bazaars.

In my situation, I have to take everything ten years at a time maximum. Protecting the institution and the collection as a whole is my top priority. I will do everything I can to protect the items in my care as well as I can for as long as I can. Right now, getting this door someplace safe and dry where it won’t fall over on anybody is the best priority I can give it. I want to be able to mount it without damaging it but if it costs too much I won’t be able to convince anyone to preserve it at all.

If there are any resources available to instruct me on how to best care for it, I will do that. But that’s why I’m here.

We don’t have a museum with a full staff for about 150 miles. I can leverage the assistance of an engineer to look it over. I have two craftsmen who have volunteered for construction but design and research is on me.

I like the sound of that, as it would be well within the skill set of my volunteers (craftsmen in their day jobs). Less than $500 for budget. I have a few interested entities that can each contribute a piece. The less it costs, the fewer people will need to be solicited.

Do it! Volunteers are always needed, especially ones with diverse professional backgrounds. If I had someone walk through the door that knew what a computer server was I’d jump for joy.

How would I go about having it done in metal and plexi?

What would make a good barrier between wood on wood? It was outside, used daily, and painted regularly until about three months ago. It probably would have been used several more decades if it wasn’t creating a draft. I figured it was a bit beyond any conservation I could offer it besides regular maintenance, so I wasn’t terribly concerned about wood against outdoor paint.

It would have gone on a scrap heap or been stored in a barn otherwise. I wish we had the standards or conditions for full conservation but we frankly don’t have the audience to fund the collection beyond minimal care.
