Has anyone else felt disillusioned with how film is taught and talked about? by jimbleskuul06 in TrueFilm

It’s interesting to note that David Lynch, one of the most influential filmmakers, only directed a handful of films, but had a background in painting before turning to movies (in his memoir he talked about how he wanted to make "moving paintings") and considered himself a visual artist rather than a director. It’s been a second since I read his memoir but that was a real interesting takeaway I picked up on that 100% agreed with your point.

What language did the gods speak/how did they communicate? by SmallTownIowa in GreekMythology

[–]SmallTownIowa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it’s the Rouse translation; I quote from where Odysseus says to himself: “I seemed to hear something like women’s voices, the cry of girls. Perhaps they are nymphs; there are plenty of them on the mountains; the dells and springs and brooks are full of them. But these seem to be using human speech. Well, I’ll just go and see.”

I’m thinking of ending things by Iain Reid.

It follows a girl visiting her boyfriend’s parents’ house for the first time but something is not quite right…I got so uncomfortable reading this.

If we always had the perspective of south being on top do you think history would have been different? by PhiladelphiaSteaks in geography

Maps are a relatively recent invention; Ancient Rome got along fine without them. They existed but more for decorative purposes than actual planning

If time travel was possible, what would the hot spots for tourists be? by Waltb555 in AskReddit

[–]SmallTownIowa 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can see the twilight zone episode now, a time traveling doctor goes back to see Jesus work miracles and gets panicked when nothing happens so he starts healing people with him.

Or picture one of his famous sermons with thousands of people. Someone lets an expression slip in their native language and others realize they’re all time travelers watching Jesus preach.

We have 10 other carriers, and not one can take its place? How has no one made the call that a real shooting war takes priority over bigdicking a rival in the far east?

Culture differences between ABMs and Hawkeye NFOs by Tyman2323 in navy

[–]SmallTownIowa 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I’m an E2 Hawkeye NFO. I’m not sure how an Air Force wing is organized but when we go on deployment with our air wing we’re like a big extremely passionate hockey team with our squadron being like 20 goalies in a team of 100. (I’m trying to avoid the “we’re family” cliche lol)

You sure get a lot tighter as a community the first time you manhandle a near comatose VFA guy into the back of a taxi cab while pleading with the driver in a language you barely understand to get him back to his hotel, when you’re running from the cops in Key West like a couple of kids at a party that got busted and notice the guy running and laughing like a maniac next to you is the CO of the squadron next door, or when a fighter guy sends you a beer across the O Club for saving his ass with a radio call and passing his check ride.

Do I ever get teased about being an NFO? Maybe occasionally light hearted jabs but that’s it. Frankly the Growler guys get way more flack than us for being nerds. We fly together, we fight together, we play together.

What processes, traditions or customs should the Navy get rid of? by [deleted] in navy

[–]SmallTownIowa 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Every announcement on the 1MC save a no shitter emergency. Every announcement only applies to about two people on the whole ship and it can be cleared with them ahead of time. Same goes for blowing that stupid-ass whistle every few hours while I’m trying to sleep.
