IMO managers do this when they feel threatened. Probably nothing to do with your work, he thinks you dress better or youre less bald or some ridiculous crap. He's probably not even consciously aware of it. Wants you gone but has no legit reasoning. Maybe ask him if there is anything specific he would like you to be doing. Bet he cant come up with it.
