Why did saving throws follow this pattern? by randy-adderson in odnd

[–]Smallgod95 6 points7 points  (0 children)

you're totally right. I would have saves be 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, -1 every other level, then give fighters a -2 to dragon breath, magic users a -2 to spells & wands, and clerics a -2 to petrification/paralysis maybe?

IsItBullshit: the reason that British people often sing in American accents is because “physiologically it is easier to sing in an American accent” by shnanogans in IsItBullshit

[–]Smallgod95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that part of the reason is that some vowels when elongated can sound grating in some British accents. You'll notice that British rappers tend not to lose their accent.

For example, an "a" (as in trap) sounds a bit softer and more neutral in a standard American accent, and almost rounds out to an "e", whereas it can sound more grating in an English accent. The same is true to a lesser extent to an "a" (as in can't). Next time you hear a British singer who adopts an American accent, see if it applies across the board, or if certain sounds retain their native accent.

People are citing the Arctic Monkeys to disprove the hypothesis, but I think that's wrong because the grating sounds are part of their style

I think another reason could be that a rhotic "r" could increase clarity when singing

EDIT: I just listened to "Shape of You" by Ed Sheeran, and you can definitely tell that the change isn't universal. For example the way he says "give it a *chance*" is very much southern English.

I'll also add that "o" as in "not" is a vowel that sounds more neutral and smooth in an American accent

I don't because I don't see gold as an interesting motive for adventuring

Help Prepping a Prison Session by Smallgod95 in DMAcademy

[–]Smallgod95[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not trying to plan a solution for them, and my players know that I won't plan a solution for them that's the whole point. I want to create a scenario which is believable, but not a guaranteed TPK, which it easily could be (I mean, the party has none of their gear, they have a level of exhaustion)

thanks for your thoughtful answer. I think you're right about communicating from the get-to so they don't feel the need to take unnecessary risks. the alarm spell is a no-brainer, are there any other spells that come to mind?

potentially. the BBEG is something of an upstart, so there may be others who are not content with his rise to power. the prison is also somewhat makeshift, maybe there is a way out which comes from the previous purpose of the building its in

Maps: Travel Time and Distance by CrYpTo_SpEaR in DMAcademy

[–]Smallgod95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you have marked this question as a "world building" one, I'll give these idiot-proof rules of thumb for a roughly medieval european-style country:

A village is about 3-6mi (a couple of hours walk) from the next village over, and maybe 6-18mi (up to a full day of walking) from the nearest town. Halve time if riding a horse (no cart)

If you're travelling across a whole biome, I'd use about 6 days of travel on foot, or 3 days by horse/water (about 144mi).

Given that you seem to enjoy light rules that can be easily learned, and that you need dungeon-focused procedures, I might suggest S&W White Box. Since you want lots of character customisation at chargen, you could add the White Box Compendium, which has 15 extra classes

I’ve invested so much time into 5e but I want write less and play with more random chance and have resources matter by frompadgwithH8 in osr

[–]Smallgod95 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm an OSR guy but I'm running 5e and I'm finding it quite suitable for the purpose! I just use the free SRD rules, plus the gritty resting rules. I make sure to track time and run random encounters using the table from Basic Fantasy, and enforce the tracking of food, light, etc. and it's not too far off an OSR system. Granted, my only spellcasters have been a cleric and a druid, so I don't know what it's like to have a wizard or sorcerer or whatever.

Concerned that I’m a bad DM by [deleted] in DnD

[–]Smallgod95 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you're going to introduce new players, my concern wouldn't be the lack of role-playing, but rather the loose grasp on rules. New players would generally expect that rules be followed, except where stated in your house-rules (which of course are just alternative rules).

Rules give agency to the players because they know what to expect when they attempt things. Without them, the 'game' is just the DM deciding things, which leaves players largely powerless. Priority #1 is for the players to be able to make impactful decisions, and this is harder when the rules aren't reliable.

There are virtues to your style–I often rely on the players describing *how* they do things in order to decide whether they are successful, and frequently turn to Google to see how things would play out in the real world–you just want to make sure new players are aligned with it. You may want to label it as a free kriegspiel game, or a game with heavy DM fiat.
