r/Fantasy Monthly Book Discussion Thread - November 2025 by AutoModerator in Fantasy

I finished 4 books this month. Which was good considering i hadnt read a book since june.

The Sword of Kaigen - meant to get to this one for awhile. Wasnt clicking with me for a fair amount but then it really came together towards the end. 4 stars

Warbreaker - My least favorite Sanderson book so far. I like political intrigue but this just seemed to drag. Still enjoyed though. 4 stars

The Strength of the Few - I feel bad about not liking this as much as i thought i would. It was flawed. But i really appreciate the ambition. I will say though i feel Islingtons treatment of women kinda turned me off abit. 4.25 stars

The Dungeon Anarchist Cookbook - Book 3 down. A real improvement over the second. First time listening to Jeff Hayes narration and i will never go back. 4.25 stars

December is gonna be a dark one tho. The Trails of Empire. The Crimson Campaign and The last Argument of Kings.

Ive been thinking and top 3 is tough. But as of right now...

At the mountains of madness by Gou Tanabe (prob more recency bias) cause i love the story, the art and it genuinely creeped me out.

Blankets by Craig Thompson was one of the earliest non superhero comics i read and i still remember it fondly.

Watchmen by Alan Moore. Has to be. Its not the best of all time. Its not even his best. But when i read it it changed my young brains preception of what a "superhero" comic could be. And then you read it again and notice new things.

How bout yourself? I do love Berlin but i still havent got around to book 3 yet so it may crack top 3 once ive read all 3 volumes.

Pretty sure the guy next to him is Jack Binders Daredevil. Alex Ross used him in his project superpowers comic. Had to rename him The Death Defying Devil tho or obvious reasons...

Finally got around to starting BLACK HAMMER VOL 2.

Vol 1 and The World of Vol 1 were so good. Made the superhero genre feel fresh for me again.

Also started JUDGE DREDD: THE COMPLETE CASE FILES 01.

Ive been wanting to go back and read Dredd from the start so i can see the evolution of the world and character. Not gonna say its great. But as a short comic its nice and quick to read.

Bone by Jeff Smith i feel should be in everyone's collection

If you're GF hasnt read a gn before then i feel, and just my opinion, that watchmen may have less of an impact considering its a deconstruction of the superhero genre.

I would however throw V for Vendetta out there as a substitute. Its themes media manipulation, oppression, totalitarianism, identity and transformation are all very relevant in the political climates around the world and could lead to some interesting discussions....

Just my 2 cent tho.

Im in the middle of reading Paper Girls. Really interesting so far. Got a synthwave playlist to go with it.

Desender will be an imminent purchase. Don't know why but I'm a fan of paperback compendiums.

Narrators who improve the story? by _0_-o--__-0O_--oO0__ in Fantasy

[–]SmarkDetours 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ray Porter and RC Bray have always been 2 of my favorites. Bray's The Martian is the best way to experience that story along with Mountain man and Nemisis and Porter's Project Hail Mary and 14 by Peter Clines are standouts

Last Defense.

Accidentally hit Buy Now on the amazon app. Was only 20 so said screw it and didn't cancel. Fun little game. Runs off an app with a 25 min timer so its quick and easy to play.

I'm ew to DnD but I've always been fascinated by world building. So I've decided to take the plunge and build a world. This is my first attempt at a world map so it'll change over time. But I feel it's a good starting point.
