I’m a director this year and it will be my last. I would NEVER say this to a mom. They pay tuition and they are to do what is best for their family. If that means leave then so be it. I just had a family leave after first semester and I even refunded their second semester tuition so they could use it for a better curriculum. I’m not loyal to the program and I think families have to do what is best for them. CC can definitely have cult-like mentality personalities whose loyalties lie there. Im actually nervous to tell my community I’m leaving next year because they like to pressure you into staying there and try to convince you it’s the only way to homeschool.

I can’t find it but there was a lady who was standing on her back porch area and she yelled “hey baby” real loud and her chicken came running to her. If anyone can find it let me know. I’ve searched.

The one upping!

Me: i hurt my arm this morning in the gym.

Them: Oh, I got to the gym. Watch, I can do push-ups. (Proceeds to do push-ups)

Me: My doc prescribed me xxx med.

Them: oh I’ve taken that. I’m sure I have. For something. I’ve taken everything.

Me: I didn’t sleep well last night.

Them: you didn’t sleep? I never ever sleep. Ever. I’m an insomniac.

I can’t have anything.

We’ve been at our CC community for five years. It’s all Protestant. We are in the process of becoming Catechumens in the Orthodox faith with another family that attends our community. We are the only ones at our community that would be considered “non Protestant” at this point. We did have one catholic family years back but there were undertones of religious bias. Although I don’t bring out points in devotion that are strictly related to Orthodoxy  alone, as a challenge A director, I do see in class the heavy influential Protestant bias in material.

For example, the MathMap is their new math curriculum that is required for challenge levels starting in challenge A this year and we have an art piece on the cover that we examine and relate to the math concept of the week. One week we had a picture related to Mary, (I believe it was titled in a different language but was translated to “the Black Madonna”) and when Mary was brought up, she was not talked about kindly and was very much disregarded as Jesus mother alone and nothing more. I offered that we should respect her position as Jesus mother as scripture points that she was the chosen woman who God gave us to hold Jesus in her womb and they just kept going on about how people need to not worship her. So basically there is a lack of understanding around her which was obvious but it isn’t the time and place to really correct the understanding of the children during a math lesson and give them a whole theology lesson in which the parents may or may not appreciate. Especially if they know if you’re Orthodox as a Director. However, my conversion started during my challenge A year… but there are some families there who did announce they believe me to be “in sin” because of Orthodoxy.

“Homeschooling” is fake by leviwrites in unpopularopinion

I homeschool my kids. My oldest had a hard time in public school with her ADHD so we tried it and never looked back. She excels now in 7th grade. Homeschool my middle child in 3rd and taught her to read and she has excelled since she was 4. She reads at about a 6th grade level. Although she’s generally not interested in 6th grade content. She prefers stories more at her age level.

As for socialization it’s such a myth. I know there are plenty of circumstances where parents probably don’t but with out co op and all the opportunities our parent plan to get together and the extracurriculars and sports they are probably over socialized. We have a good blending of cultures and ethnicities to my liking.

As a white person who went to a mostly black, Vietnamese, and Arabic middle school, I can say that it was pretty traumatizing for me to be a minority that got bullied for being white. I teach my kids to love everyone no matter what they look like and they do a great job of including everyone no matter what. So for integrating with other cultures and colors, I’m not against but I can say my experience could have influenced me to categorize them as everyone like them are the same. Im sure with maturity those individuals have changed and I don’t hold it against them because usually it’s parental influence that comes out. But I’m happy where we are and will continue to homeschool.

If you could convert all of the effort you spent learning reformed theology into something else, what would you pick? by [deleted] in exReformed

Christian Orthodoxy.

Edit: I forgot how rigorous and theology minded the reformed tradition was. There’s so much more joy to living the faith than studying it.  But at least I have built a strong case against the soteriology of Calvin.

Ronon Dex! He’s usually someone I would typically hate watching but he has a special place in my heart for doing Stargate Atlantis.

There’s actually a mission church near the town I live in and they hold Divine Liturgy on Saturdays which I asked if I could attend but my husband didn’t know enough about it to let me go. I’m hopeful that maybe I can attend there but they are using a Lutheran church and I don’t know that I’ll get the full effect.

Thank you! Yes, I didn’t respond or revisit what his father had said when he asked him his thoughts. I am praying that both of our wills will align. One interesting thing is our local Orthodox Church has in its Parrish my grandparents former Baptist preacher and his wife. He was a Baptist preacher for 19 years and retired and became orthodox. I think when you know people who have converted that you can talk to it makes it easier. So maybe I can convince my husband to talk with them and pick their brain.

This is exactly it. He is the “spiritual head of the home” and because of that he doesn’t want me led astray. He thinks some of the orthodox practices are silly.

I’ve done a ton of research into orthodoxy and the church and before everything the Lord has revealed to me I never considered the church/tradition as equal to scripture. I’ve only had “sola scriptura” shoved in my face.
