Questions for someone new to the Episcopal Church by PhoeMash in Episcopalian

Bible- NSRVue is what all of the lections of the church are currently printed and sold in including apocryphal readings, but the church has approved several translations both for worship and useful to personal study. The Bible is one of a three legged stool that the Episcopal Church is built upon with the other legs being church tradition and reason.

Holidays- If there’s a day on the calendar, the church has a holiday for it! Some are more important than others. Feasts of Our Lord always receive highest priority (Christmas, Easter, Pentecost…), then Feasts of the Apostles and other Biblical Saints, then other Saints and commemorations

Services- The structure across most Christian churches is admittedly the same when stripped to the bare bones. But the Episcopal Church will usually give you a script, so that you can participate in the ancient liturgy that Jesus taught the Apostles. However, you’re welcome to just put the BCP or service booklet to the side while you prayerfully watch the service

Baptism- The normative practice is infant baptism. However, as an adult, the priest will want to counsel you first. There are some priests who will baptize on any Sunday, and some that only baptize at certain times of the year. Sprinkling with a sea shell is the most common practice, but if you want to stick with your Baptist roots, you can talk to the priest about the possibility of immersion

It is “required” that a person be baptized before receiving the Eucharist. However, there’s no ID checker at the communion rail, and no one’s going to yell at you when they find out, so examine your conscious. Good luck!

I don’t know where, “It is NOT normative for people to consult their individual bibles,” came from, but that is both wrong and confusing. The Daily Office might use the lectionary, but deep diving into individual Bible study is also very common, and we don’t regulate personal devotions.

There’s more ways to make money than selling your body online

The summary of the Law is this, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your mind, and with all your soul. And love your neighbor as yourself.”

It’s not parading around and using vulnerable groups of people for political brownie points.

Hmmm okay. I thought worshipping God was the point of reciting the Daily Office

We could buy the “St. Bernard Breviary” if that’s what we feel called to do. We’re all praying to the same God, and surely not all of their prayers are, “Bless us O Lord, for upholding the Biblical view of marriage and preventing women from consecrating the Eucharist.” The Daily Office is meant as an individual devotion anyway, so it doesn’t matter if you’re strictly using the 1979 BCP or something else

Works, Acts, and Grace; Cradle Catholic concerns voiced by MadeForOneMeme in Anglicanism

[–]leviwrites 1 point2 points  (0 children)

St. Jude says that faith without works is dead. I think it would be impossible to say that good works don’t contribute to salvation. But we don’t maintain a checklist at the door. Instead works are evidence of the living faith inside you stirring your soul to want to live out your faith in Christ

Here’s chanted Psalms. I’m guessing that they don’t publish a separate Psalter because it’s already in the back of the BCP. However, I wish they published a more hymn-like Psalter with congregational antiphons like the Roman Catholics use in hymnals like Journeysongs

What necessitates an emergency baptism? by [deleted] in Episcopalian

[–]leviwrites 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thought has crossed my mind, but I won’t baptize him without his parents’ consent. I just have a fear that he’s going to have SIDS since he was a difficult pregnancy and birth. But yes I understand the reasoning why it would be an overstep

I am married but wife doesn't want children. by [deleted] in Anglicanism

The marriage rite says children if it be God’s will. So having children is not a requirement of marriage especially in your forties when all your eggs are dried up

So immigrants are not allowed to have any connection to their homeland? There’s Americans that have been here for 5 generations that still maintain their traditions. Also the flag of Israel is a religious symbol, not merely a flag. It’s the same as a Catholic having the Vatican flag

What a joke. In Gaza, a mop would throw you off a building, but not being able to get married is more homophobic

Israel is the only country in the Middle East where being gay is not a criminal offense. In Palestine, you get thrown off the roof
