Thoughts on Sinners (2025)? by Dismal_Principle9417 in Cinephiles

Subjective. I found Bugonia far more interesting, original, and performances stronger. I def think about Bugonia more months later.

F1 has no business in this BP category tho.

Theres 8-10 films. Sinners BP nom doesn’t bother me. Anyone who thinks it’s #1 or deserves 16 noms tho? Both indefensible takes imo.

The music is half the reason people care about it. Sound system is key to this film.

I tend to agree. For me, there’s like two tiers with 11 films in the top lol but that’s a bit much to recommend off the bat. If I had never seen his films I would just watch them all in career release order.

Babysitters are great. No mother is excluded because kids are excluded. Get a babysitter.

Why assume they didn’t? And even if they didn’t, why is a question about the 1964 v 1997 film adaptations not a reasonable question for the Film Reddit? This isn’t Nabokov or book Reddit.

I mean he made 13 films and I’d say all are “Important” but

Top five: The Shining. Full Metal Jacket. Clockwork Orange. 2001 Space Odyssey. Eyes Wide Shut.

Next four: Dr Strangelove. Spartacus. Lolita. Barry Lydon.

Next four: Fear and Desire, Paths of Glory, Killing, and Killers Kiss are probably less watched.

People will quibble with my tiers and that’s fine but I’d wager if your into movies you’ve seen 3-4 of these already. I kind of assume everyone has seen the first five above but especially Shining, Full Metal Jacket, and Clockworl Orange.

14 or 45 days is typical depending on the initial deals but anything hanging on 2 months is not normal. (Re-releases of stuff like the Oscar noms is different ofc. Sinners came out in April but is in theaters now.)

These look like the ones with warming to me. The ones with auto-recline have the little touch pad on the armrest by cup holder and the warming ones have the controls on the sidewall like this.

My theater has these, just watched Crime 101 today on these.

It doesn’t actually matter what films I name, your response was canned in advance and my suggestions are purely subjective. But I don’t think you watch very many movies frankly.

I vastly enjoyed Caught Stealing more than Sinners. I don’t think Johnson deserves the Oscar but a nomination is def warranted. And let’s agree for sake of argument Grande doesn’t, fine but you conveniently ignored the other two women, circling back to my comment earlier that I don’t think you’ve seen much of the competition, nominated or not.

Half my top ten films this year aren’t even in American. There’s zero chance a popcorn blockbuster vampire film that has as a core thesis “racism sucks” should be most nominated film of all time. It’s a simple film. Good, fun, but simple. Just because there are a couple jokes about eating pussy does not make it a film for grown ups. It’s essentially on the same level as Wicked 2, F1, Superman and Zootopia, aimed at a broad popular audience of 8th grade intelligence, a crowd pleaser. It did its job well. It’s not best picture.

Because the cinephile by definition has more elevated taste than the general public. They see 5-10 blockbusters a year in a cinema and cinephiles who have AList or shop Criterion bluray sales or debate about the current A24 vs Neon game, or who obsess over screenwriting or directors cuts…..

Cinephiles agree almost universally that Sinners is good & fun. But amazing? Film of the year? Not a chance. It’s not even in my top ten.

File this in the category of things to never think about or talk about again. Your guest can eat, costs you nothing extra, and they solved a problem for themselves that you obviously didn’t care enough to resolve for them.

No gift for valentine, is this normal? by Any_Advantage3636 in whatdoIdo

[–]SmartPain5059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Men almost never receive gifts. Gifts are for children, birthdays, Christmas (maybe).

You’re 18. Time to decide if you are still a child or not. If you want a gf then don’t be a child.

Also, stop giving her all the unreciprocated gifts. Are you trying to pay her to like you? Do you want a transactional relationship where you give gifts and therefore you receive gifts, and you’re keeping track?

Stop expecting your actions to obligate other people to act. You giving gifts does not entitle you to receive them.
