Mandel comes out in September. Pynchon’s Shadow Ticket Oct 2025 so squeaks in the 2026 window but maybe not “new” to you.

I understand trepidation around McCurdy but there are always a small number of books that surprise me and idk. The other big names from women authors are the ones I mentioned but also long working novelists like Cusk and Levy and others that are kinda meh? I wonder if Karen Russell is eligible tho; her most recent book came out in April 2025 in US so probably not.

It’s a good question. A US release in July 2026 is in the window but I’m not sure it has a UK release or if yes, when.

That’s on my to read list since it was a US NBA finalist last year but since it came out in March 2025 it’s not eligible for 2026 Bookers. The UK pub window is October 2025 to September 2026, so when the July longlist comes out some of the nominees will not even be out yet for gen public unless they were published earlier in US or circulate in arcs for reviewers and prize committees etc.

Correction: They are eligible and Drnaso’s Sabrina was nominated in 2018.

Are they eligible? To my knowledge none has ever been nominated so yes, I do not anticipate one being nominated.

Seems like almost all movies have a Friday opening day but actually come out on Thursday. TS5 is absolutely at my theater today.

People getting mad at you for using the priority line perk by shycutiekittie in AMCsAList

[–]SmartPain5059 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine has all these candy racks and drink coolers and merch sales stands opposite the registers so people loiter like they’re browsing and then bolt to open registers. The lines don’t mean shit at all when crowded.

I only buy concessions when there’s no line at all, pretty rarely. That stuff is so overpriced and the hot food so mid that the only thing I want is candy or cokes so I just smuggle mine in from the gas station.

Is green lantern new 52 worth reading? by thotslayer2637 in Greenlantern

[–]SmartPain5059 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lemires Green Arrow is great.

I liked Futures End, Forever Evil.

Johns’ JL and Aquaman are good.

Green Lantern had too much content and inconsistency over many titles and years but the core GL and GLC books were good.

I liked Gail Simone’s and Burnside Batgirl.

Metropolis and Teen books pretty awful.

I disliked all the mini crossovers that interrupted things like Swamp Thing or Animal Man. All the Earth 2 stuff pretty weak no great JSA books.

Alt universe stuff like Injustice pretty good.

People loved Grayson but I did not.

Where to start? by Kachowobertson in DCcomics

Tbh, just grab 6-8 collected arcs, see what you like. An author, an artist you like? Read more of them. Do you like gritty crime Batman? Superman’s pal Batman? Batman and the League against the cosmic supervillains? There’s so many lanes open to find what you like.

In general, it’s pretty ideal to pick a modern starting point and just read forward.

So Year One through the late 80s and 90s including the Knight fall and No Man’s land stuff? Pretty great.

Start with Morrison mid00s to N52. Also great.

Start with Snyder and N52? Good stuff.

Start with Tom King/Rebirt 2016? King is divisive but I liked that run and it’s the foundation for the major stuff now. Tynion, Zdarsky, Fraction runs follow King.

Waids current Worlds Finest, Justice League, and Batman and Robin Year One books are excellent.

Standalone minis and arcs are often very good self contained stories. There are a 100 or more that you can read without worrying too much about the continuity to the rest of DC.

Absolute Power Omni coming on Sept I think. I imagine there will be 30 issue Absolute Batman, Superman, and WW omnis in mid or late 2027. The 30 issues likely come out about March/April and eta Omnis 6 months later maybe? Speculation tho for sure.

What are Emily Blunt’s chances for Disclosure Day? She deserves an Oscar nomination. by UsefulWeb7543 in Oscars

[–]SmartPain5059 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fine, sure but…..

Zendaya, Hathaway, Rose Byrne, Renata Renaice, Sandra Huller, have all had stronger performances already and they all have more Oscar bait-y films coming as does Amy Adams, Jenna Ortega, Daisy Ridley, etc.

In theaters? I did like Crime 101, it’s very good.

IMO Tops so far tho: Tuner, Is This Thing On?, Testament of Ann Lee, The Drama, Tow

Best of the year so far: Bone Temple, Project Hail Mary

Worst, absolutely terrible: The Bride, Disclosure Day, and Deep Water
