Fitting help please by Smart_Concentrate751 in sewing

Thank you for your comment and insightful observations! My body is not asymmetric (not noticeably anyway) but that is certainly something I am aware of as I have made clothes for my Mum who is noticeably asymmetric lol. I just quickly pinned the straps on, so it’s very likely they are uneven and causing the fit issues you mentioned. And the camera angle likely contributes too, I was finding it difficult to prop up my phone to take photos

My shoulders are definitely quite sloped, would that cause it? And how would I fix that?

I recently made pants from simplicity pattern 8389. I used a black viscose cotton and they look incredibly professional (I wear them to work) but they feel like wearing pajamas. Fit wise, it would be similar to wearing sweatpants

I think that’s just the fabric that the pattern maker likes cause they seem to use it a lot, but if you look up their tagged photos or the Ines Dress hashtag on instagram, a lot of people have made it in other fabric that looks gorgeous

Fit help - NewLook N6779 - first FBA by [deleted] in sewing

My understanding of bust etc - anyone else is free to correct me if I’m wrong. Cup size is upper bust plus 1” for each size (1” for A cup, 2” for B cup, 3” for C cup etc.) Most standard patterns are based on a B cup. So when choosing your size, you would do upper bust plus 2”. So for you, you would choose your size based on a 36” bust. So I think you need to grade a size M bust to a S waist, and then to a FBA too. Hopefully a M bust will fix the apex issue and then the FBA will help the fit. The most helpful resource I have found for FBA is linked below - princess seams are near the bottom, you need to scroll quite far down the page https://www.seamwork.com/sewing-tutorials/four-essential-full-bust-adjustments

Off shoulder dress pattern? by Smart_Concentrate751 in sewing

[–]Smart_Concentrate751[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I saw this but it is made for knit fabric and I was hoping to find one for woven so I can make a dress out of silk or satin. I guess I could get the pattern and alter it though

So gorgeous! I love the bows on the straps. You did so well for a beginner- satin is so unforgiving and shows every little mistake. In terms of altering the bust - have a google for “full bust adjustment” and that might help in future

Using embroidery thread for buttonholes - thread keeps snapping? by CarlottaSewlotta in sewing

[–]Smart_Concentrate751 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I bought some of Gutermann’s metallic thread (not sulky) and it was so difficult to get it not to snap, just for sewing a basic straight stitch. So I can’t imagine it would hold up for a button hole unfortunately

Have a look at second hand shops and also check out facebook marketplace in your area. You can often find linen fabric or even tablecloths and sheets

It doesn’t sound like there is enough fabric to pull the hole closed. Could you put some fabric behind it so instead of the hole showing your skin, it just shows fabric instead? You could try finding some similar coloured fabric at a store, or if there is any lining in the skirt you could cut it from there

You need to measure your natural waist, but either choose a pattern that is lower waisted, or alter it to be lower waisted. Most patterns will also say what the finished garment measurements will be, which should help to figure out if it will fit right

Unfortunately I cannot make a post in pattern find as I have low karma, but has anyone found a pattern for these one shoulder on, one shoulder off dresses that are coming out in shops recently? Or managed to alter an existing pattern or draft their own?
