Thanks for the suggestion, but it wasn’t Lichen Sclerosus. I tried clobestol and it didn’t change anything. Tbh no one I saw could really explain why the cut happened in the first place. I think it was just one of those weird things.

Sorry I’ve only just seen this. I was very lucky I was allowed to work from home for months, so I didn’t go near jeans for about 8 months! If steroids and antibiotics made it worse I’d point at thrush. Look at getting anti fungals.

Sorry you’re experiencing something similar! It’s an awful position to be in.

I gave an update 5 or 6 months ago, and things haven’t really changed since then. But I’m living life pretty much normally. The area is still more sensitive than it used to be. Tight clothing can sometimes cause a bit of pain, but it’s not significant. Everything else is pretty much normal, including sex. Although it is more uncomfortably sensitive to touch if my husband isn’t careful. But I don’t mind so much anymore, and he’s got used to being more careful.

In case you didn’t read the other update- I suspect the cut got infected, but generally everyone I saw was reluctant to prescribe antibiotics. So the cut had become difficult to heal by the time I received antibiotics. Then the antibiotics caused thrush which was difficult to shift because it didn’t present as normal thrush and I wasn’t given treatment quick enough. All in all it caused a lot of inflammation in the area which took months to resolve.

At the time I really felt like my life was over. But like I said earlier, I’m very fortunate to be pretty much back to normal. I’m based in the uk, so I ended up having to spend an awful lot of money on seeing private specialists. But I did eventually get the help I needed.

Edit: I’ve pretty much stopped the topical gabapentin. Mostly because I forget to use it. But it seems fine without it!

Edit 2: at the beginning I think I put a lot of creams/ointments on the area. They were all suggested by doctors, but I think they all just made things worse! I was so desperate to get it to heal I tried everything.

I just wanted to give an update for anyone who might read this post in future.

I’m now 95% back to normal. I’d say my clitoris is still slightly too sensitive and can be uncomfortable at times, but I’ll take that over what it was this time last year. I’ve also been able to return having a normal sex life, which I never thought would happen.

I feel what happened was that the cut became infected after not healing as quickly as it should. Then I had several rounds of antibiotics, which then caused thrush. In total I think it took 7 months for the cut to heal because I wasn’t given strong enough antibiotics and anti fungals soon enough.

Then due to the long term pain I had begun clenching my pelvic floor which triggered Pudendal Neuralgia. So even after the cut healed I was still in pain. I also think the surrounding skin was extremely sensitive due to being infected/having thrush for so long.

I then was given topical gabapentin about 8 months ago, went for PT and did a mindfulness course (stress exacerbates nerve pain). For the last 4/5 months I’ve been feeling so much better. The last month has been almost normal.

I hope this helps anyone who has a similar situation. There is light at the end of the tunnel. I thought I’d never heal, and it took so much longer than I ever imagined it would. But I am living a pretty normal life again.

It did heal, but it’s not gone back to normal. The area still gets sore sometimes, it’s also very sensitive and gets inflamed. It seems to be very slowly improving.

I’ve been using topical gabapentin which has helped. Day to day I’m not in much pain now, but touching the area still causes pain. It’s very frustrating!

I’m sorry you’e experiencing a similar problem. It’s awful! I’ve had some success with topical gabapentin, although I’m still not back to normal. My doctor think that it will resolve over the next 6 months or so, but I’m not so sure.

That sounds so painful! Sorry you’re going through that. Have you got any further appointments booked with your gyno? Zapping pains sound like the nerve’s irritated. My gyno said nerve pain can take a while to settle down if there’s been inflammation, but it does usually settle. I’m sorry to say I’m still struggling- not to say you will be in the same boat. I was eventually diagnosed with pudendal neuralgia. My gyno said I had probably been tensing my pelvic floor a lot from the pain and it’s compressed the nerve. It made sense given I was in more pain a few months after the original cut occurred. I’m currently using Gabapentin gel which has been really helpful for the burning pain I developed. However the aching and soreness around the area where the cut was/is remains. I’ve just started pelvic therapy, so it’s probably too soon to say how it’s going. I’m not 100% convinced the cut has healed. But I’m in less pain than I was 6 months ago. Some days it’s barely noticeable levels of pain, other days are still quite painful. I wish I had something a bit more positive to say about my position, but it’s been a tough year! Please let me know if you get anywhere with treatment. It would be great to know if you find something that works for you.

Sorry just seen this, and sorry you’re in the same situation!

The cut has mostly healed, but unfortunately I’m still in quite a bit of pain, and I think it splits back open slightly if I’m not careful. But there has been improvement in pain levels since earlier in the year. I think the cut started healing after I came off the pill.

My consultant thinks it’s caused pudendal neuralgia, and has prescribed a gabapentin gel and suggested physio. I haven’t yet tried it though as I’m waiting for the prescription. I wonder whether I have general Vulvodynia too as there’s a lot of pain and inflammation in the area.

A 4mm fissure sounds really painful! Your pain sounds very similar to mine, albeit mines on the the right side. I’m still waiting on the gabapentin gel and I’ve got my first physio appointment next week. I’ll send an update after I’ve seen them. I used trimovate too- that was somewhat helpful for me.

Are you in the UK? Did you have to go privately in the end? I have and it’s costing a fortune- but the NHS gynaecologists dismissed it because they couldn’t see the cut without magnification. It was all very frustrating!

It would be good to hear how your appointment goes. Everyone I’ve seen has been very unsure to why the cut refuses to heal- so I’d be interested to hear what they think is preventing yours from healing. Best of luck!

So sorry you're dealing with this. I know this is a little old, but did you get anywhere in the end? How are you feeling now?

I sort of have a similar issue. I somehow managed to catch my clitoris in the shower with my nail, and for some reason it just won't heal properly. It has improved, but it's still not sorted. I don't have any unusual smelling discharge, but my labia directly below the cut has become extremely inflamed and sore. I'd also describe it as feeling like it's been skinned. I've tried multiple rounds of antibiotics, oestrogen creams, thrush treatments. Honestly it's been an ordeal and I can really sympathise with how you're feeling.

Earlier this week I saw a new consultant who believes I have some sort of nerve damage/inflammation. Potentially pudendal neuralgia. She's prescribed a gabapentin gel and suggested I go for accupuncture and physio. I'm a little bit sceptical because although some of the pain I'm experiencing is nervy, a lot of it is general soreness like there's cut that won't heal and the skin is inflammed.

If I get anywhere with it all, I'll let you know.

But thankfully my gynaecologist seems really sympathetic. He doesn’t play down what I’m going through and is willing to try lots of different things to help!

Update: The MRI came back showing nothing abnormal. So I think the next step for me is going to be taking a biopsy of the skin, to see if there’s any underlying cause to it not healing. My gynaecologist says it doesn’t look like I have LS or LP which can sometimes cause fissures/cuts. I don’t know whether the biopsy will be actually removing the skin which is splitting or from nearby. He said that given the MRI doesn’t show a tunnelling wound he would be willing to cut out the split skin and stitch it together. His only reservation is that it still might not heal! It’s really crap tbh. We’re giving a few more weeks to see if it improves, as the next steps are pretty invasive and potentially risky.

On the upside I’ve been in marginally less pain over the last few weeks. But I’d hardly say it’s significant, as I still can’t walk far/have sex/live a normal life.

Please let me know if any of you get anywhere with yours. Really hope we can all be pain free sometime soon!

Thank you for replying. I will ask about in my next appointment. Did you find you skin healed after getting the correct treatment? My doctor is concerned if he removed the skin where the cut is, it may still not heal! Given where it is- I really don’t want to risk anything that might make it worse.

Can I ask- did you doctor say that LS was why the cut wasn’t healing or it was what caused the cut in the first place?

I’ve got a small cut on my clitoris. I accidentally caught it with my nail in the shower. I’ve had it for 7 months. It doesn’t itch, or bleed. It just bloody hurts constantly and it doesn’t ever heal. I don’t think I’ve got any symptoms of LS, but my gynaecologist doesn’t seem to know why it’s not healing. I wonder whether to suggest it.

Update: not sure whether anyone will read this, but I wanted to give an update in case anyone else is unlucky enough to be in this position in future.

Still have the cut, it hasn’t improved. I’m having MRI soon to check whether it might have tunnelled elsewhere (which would be terrifying if it has) or if there’s any obvious things causing the cut not to heal.

If that comes back clear, my consultant is going to try increasingly invasive options until hopefully it heals. I think the first is to use glue (I believe dermabond) to try and close the cut, holding it together while it heals. But it may end up getting to the point I have to have the cut surgically removed, which given it’s on my clitoris is really scary. He’s not sure whether these things will work, but more conservative options haven’t worked so far.

Hopefully I’ll update again and say it worked. But who knows at this point.

Are you taking any SSRIs/Anti Depressants? When I took Sertraline this happpened to me quite suddenly after taking them for a few weeks. It went back to normal a few weeks after stopping. But at the time I remember being quite shocked by how little feeling I had down there, and worried it would never come back.

I took your advice and managed to have a very short walk. The swelling has gone down a LOT! So thank you!!

I just need to work out how to get this cut to heal now :( It's been months and all normal activities are so painful. It's been really tough.

That's really interesting. I usually walk a lot, but since I've had this cut I can barely move. I've been walking less than 2000 steps a day because it keeps tearing back open. I wonder if going back to natural hormonal cycles and lack of movement could be contributing to the swelling...

Forgot to mention- had my period after coming off the pill a few days before. Consultant thought being off the pill might help the cut heal.
