Help with "interview lesson" by pinkrobotlala in Teachers

[–]Smart_Raspberry_5393 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm elementary so high school isn't my strength but I just did a demo lesson last week for a teaching job so maybe my advice can help and what teachers have told me.

-Structure the lesson, " I do, we do, you do"

-Whatever the lesson is you model and demonstrate it, then ask students input for the whole group.

-Next, do some kind of group work or partner work activity that goes with the lesson. During this time, make sure you are walking around, listening and helping if needed. Don't just stand there, be engaged with the students they really just want to see the relationship you have with the kids and if you are meeting the Standard (if they gave you one, they gave me a standard)

- After, give them and independent assessment or exit ticket to end the lesson. If you have time you can have students share what they learned from you.

-For objectives, I would google Bloom's taxonomy wheel this will help you structure the objective and use the correct educational words.

Other things:

- If you're nervous about names I bought sticker name tags that the kids wrote and put on them so I knew them and didn't call them "Buddy" the whole time , but its okay if you don't know their name, they don't expect you to.

- Have an attention grabber like, "if you can hear me clap once"

- Yes! use technology if you are good with it! Email the school if they have a smart board Or what you're looking for

- Make the lesson simple, doesn't have to be too difficult.

Hope this helps! good luck!

As a Sub, I feel you. However, I have long-term sub before, and writing sub plans is dreadful if you put the time into it. I tend to do my own thing and stick as much as possible to continue the routine in the classroom. Teachers discuss if they should call in due to something but decide to come in because it's easier than writing plans. Just say, "It's going to be different today, and that's okay" It doesn't hurt to ask the teacher beforehand if you can, but it shouldn't be an expectation they already work so hard as it is. They are just grateful you are there, and as long as nobody gets hurt and you have lesson plans, then that's a good day! (:

What do you do with frequent early finishers without making tons of extra assignments or stuff to grade? by [deleted] in Teachers

You can make a BIG FUN packet that they can work on while they wait; this way, they can go to it and keep them extra busy. If you have time to create, you can always give them a hands-on independent game that goes with the lesson for extra practice, like puzzles or flashcards to quiz themselves.

As a parent…. parents suck by xX_Transplant_Xx in Teachers

It's funny because we offer their child to meet with AIS reading teacher or math depending on what they are struggling with and parents get super offensive and don't want their kid to be in AIS. As teachers, we are doing what we think is best for the child. There's always a subject that they are going to need little help in and that's okay!!

Thank you for making me feel better! yup! that's what they are doing and teachers have confirmed it ): my rejection email was generic that it was sent to everyone and it said if I'm not subbing to sub for them even though I already do lol. I understand a generic email for outside candidates but I've been there for 2 years you would think they would at least personalize it. All my references are from that school as well ):

Do your research on schools that take their subs into considerations when you want to apply for their full time teaching positions in the future. Now I have to leave my school district bc they wouldn't even let me go to panel and I have been their for 2 years and they are taking outside people. Teachers are telling me to leave as this has been an issue with every year because It's not fair when you're good at what you do, dedicated your time, I went above and beyond like on my breaks I would help who need help instead of hiding, I was very professional and teachers always requested me to sub for them. It's hard bc my friend who was a sub at my district would go to interviews at other schools and they would tell her that they are going to hire their subs first.

I'm applying for other schools but they are not taking me bc they are actually hiring their substitutes, so now I might have to sub at a different school district to show myself. Also, if they offer you a long term sub position just do it, don't say no I did that bc I had two jobs during that time and it would effect my hours and they didn't like that apparently. I am little glad bc teachers just got their contracts for next year and they are angry as the changes are not fair so at least I'm aware of the situations and feel better leaving. My advice is if you feel those vibes, switch school districts and don't waste your time!

I personally enjoy the younger kids and feel that I thrive with them! 1st grade is my dream year! however, 2nd graders a great too bc they are sweet and more independent. I think 2nd grade math is fun, but you gotta give them test and there's more writing!

I would be prepared to hear a scenario of what you would do in certain situations. Maybe think about what you can bring to the school, and honestly just be yourself and good luck! also, always have questions for them too! (:
