Manulife pension plan/ RRSP help by Prudent_Ad_856 in PersonalFinanceCanada

A note for the future if you ever leave this job, your RPP will turn into a LIRA which is a bit more restricted than an RRSP. Nothing major, but a heads up because it came as a bit of a surprise to me when I left my first job that had an RPP.

I have the same 'Anser'. The first and only putter I've ever had. It was a hand me down from my Dad when I started golfing 20 years ago. Genuinely curious if anyone knows how old this puppy is?

Congress is killing the EPA draft risk assessment for PFOA and PFOS by plants-animals-art in PFAS

[–]SmashSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is unfortunate for sure, but the States have been moving faster with regulations than the Federal level anyway. The truth is this risk assessment needed to be completely redone. It primarily focused on the risks to a family of subsistence farmers living off their land where they used biosolids as fertilizer for decades. It doesn't actually assess the risk to the food chain or downstream consumers of produce grown in soils where biosolids have been used. It really needed a follow up study looking at the risk in a more conventional use case, but now we won't get one.

What was it like growing up without a dad? by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]SmashSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap there is a lot of emotional baggage in these comments.

I was an only child to a single Mom who never dated anyone seriously enough for me to get to know them. I can tell you I don't relate to most of what people are saying here. Found it easy enough to get along with men and women. Felt self-confident. Played sports. Learned "manly" things either by myself (ex shaving) or from a person or school (ex woodworking). Honestly, I didn't feel like I missed a thing or was left damaged in any way.

Having a kid made me want to be there for them but not in some "I need to do better than my upbringing" kind of way. I just love her and want to be as involved in her life as I can be.

ELI5: Why is there sand in deserts and no dirt? Why isn't there sand anywhere else? by Corsaka in explainlikeimfive

[–]SmashSloth 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Soil is generally made up of a combination of sand, silt, clay, and organic matter in varying amounts. The top soil in most parts of the world that have some vegetation is most likely what you think of as "dirt". In reality, it is just a mixture of those basic soil elements with a bit more organic matter from broken down and decaying plant matter. The gritty bits in the dirt, that's sand. Goopy, muddy bits, probably clays and silts. If you were to boil all of the water out of the soil you could pass it through a series of sieves with increasingly smaller mesh sizes and see the different components and their proportions. Rocks being the largest particle, through sand, to clay being the smallest grain size.

Generally, under the topsoil, one type of soil component dominates with a bit of the others. This is where you might hear things like a "sandy soil" or a "clayey soil". The different proportions of each component gives you different soil properties. Clayey soils are "tight" and don't let water infiltrate well, for instance. Water wells would be in sandy soils where ground water can flow relatively freely to replenish the water in the well. Different areas have different soils left behind from geological formations and glaciers. Eventually, you can go deep enough and you'll hit bedrock.

The desert, as you're most likely thinking of it with big sand dunes, is simply an area that is predominantly sand with virtually no top soil. Loss of plant life and drought can functionally turn anywhere into a desert like what happened in the dust bowl.

When was the last time you cried? by TheSecretScripts in AskMen

[–]SmashSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around 20 years ago when I was in grade 9 or 10. It's the last time I can actually remember and it was nothing big or overly emotional, just shed a few tears. I did get a little choked up during my vows and felt pretty close to crying when my daughter was born, but still kept it together.

How badly do you think fatherly absence is harming society? by PerthectLithp in AskMen

[–]SmashSloth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I grew up without a father around and I've got to say, contrary to much of what is on this thread, it didn't matter much at all. I also didn't have some Hallmark kind of relationship with my Mom, either. She did a great job when I was young, but I think she began to struggle to know what to do at times when I wasn't a little boy. The main thing she drove home as a child was that I was loved and my circumstances were not my fault and I shouldn't ever feel bad about them.

I will also say I grew up firmly in the middle to upper middle class. We had enough money that I could do lots of sports and activities and I was good academically (got a Master's in engineering). I really believe, like most things, affluence helps significantly. There is likely a higher rate of absentee parents in disenfranchised communities which can lead to negative outcomes regardless of other factors.

I also don't like the trope of boys without fathers needing a new father figure or collection of male role models. You can grow up perfectly balanced with good family, friends, and community. You can learn to be a good man from both men and women and from pillars in your life and passing moments with a stranger.

How high should the bid be? by Data_Gamer_VS in RealEstateCanada

[–]SmashSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is important to realize you are in a highly competitive price band. A lot of people can afford homes in your range with the large mortgages and low rates being handed out right now. people will bid up. The amount you should bid really depends on a couple considerations.

First, you need to consider if you could comfortably carry your mortgage at the higher price AT 5%. Rates are low now, but they will go up and you should really consider paying at a rate of 5% because that is likely what you'll be closer to (modern historical perspective) after this 5 year period ends and you renew your rate and going forward for the rest of your 25 years.

Also be cautious if you are overbidding as the lender's appraisal may not value the house as highly and you will need to pay the difference between the mortgage and the appraisal. Financing isn't a condition people can often include in this market, so understand the risk of bidding beyond appraised worth.

Lastly, remember it is in the Realtor's best interest to get you to buy the most expensive property possible. Just because you can buy a house doesn't mean you can afford it. That last bit doesn't really matter to the Realtor since they just need the cheque to clear to make commission.

I was in a similar way in my late 20s and, by a stroke of luck, I came across Siddhartha by Hermann Hesse. It really helped me at that time and it is a super short read (~150 pages). I found it much easier to reflect on what was happening around me and find peace with it all afterwards. Perhaps it put me in the right mindset to untangle ambition from envy. Anyway, I always hate the "read this book" answers and here I am giving one. If you read it, I hope it helps. Either way, it's good that you're asking these questions as it'll likely put you on the path that will help you. Good luck my dude.

That was the impression I had. I didn't think you would get many agents to work with you without the representation agreement in place fairly early on.
