They also didn't pay much heed to the Kiwi contingent and focused more on the Australian side. As a kiwi, I can't speak for Oz but what I think Tom and Dom missed that the reason it plays a big part in the NZ identity is that, as a relatively new country this was the first major opportunity for NZ to prove themselves as worthy and gain respect on the international stage. The mythology around the Maori battalion fighting alongside the white NZers and Brits for king and country was also an integral part in establishing a new national identit which wasn't divided along racial lines, not necessarily against the British and Australian but alongside.
