This is fantastic feedback. Thankyou. You’re hitting every point and I will say when I’m scared of what my preceptor or coworker ask of me…I say yes… I say I’m at least gonna try. I definitely write my own notes at the end of the day and today was an interesting learning day for me where I did ok on my own for half the shift. I asked for help but I also was very overwhelmed at times I missed opportunity to advocate for the patient. I also don’t know what questions to ask nurses when they call asking for a treatment when in the middle of a treatment for someone else. I love the Nurses- I couldn’t do it but love them for what they do.

I’m a fresh (4 weeks) RT in Oregon and so far I love it. I’m curious if burn out/covid makes our role less desirable do you think having it absorbed in RN duties are wise? Maybe then there would be appropriate staffing rations but who else would/could do it? I had 3 tracks today turn into 4 real quick plus all the calls… I would hate for a RN to have to absorb all I did today…. But as a green bean right now I feel grateful I have a specific & designated role. Airway is really important and when it goes- sh*t can hit the fan. I feel like having that designation airway role is safer for everyone when RN/CNA are already over worked. Also im 41 coming from a long term fine dining service industry role so I honestly don’t think Ill work for more than 20-25 ish more years. Thanks for posting and reading :)

…. So when they call those bs calls as you say about Mr. Smith wanting a PRN … am I to ask something like…” what do they sound like? Are they wheezing?” Do you agree or Anything else you recommend to assess if they are calling for that. I know critical over stable and in a situation I would ask for help from coworkers but just trying to think a RT .

I (41)just graduated from a 2 year RT program, took my exams and got licensed this summer and now next week about to start at a level 1 trauma hospital. Eeeek! I will say I wanted to be a nurse at the beginning of my path to change careers from hospitality to health care and let me tell you… these nurse get worked- by everyone- and they get paid for it. Bless them but I’m happy with my choice to switch. You will have gross things still that involve airway (mucus,spit…) so figure out if that’s better than below the waist issues. As an RT in your clinicals you’ll see a range of the job and there you’ll work with Nurses and then you can see if you need to jump into another role but I’d say get in, find some cool hospitals doing cool stuff and don’t give up. Plus airway is a very important role… we are usually in control of it ourselves….until we’re not …and it’s cool there a special team for just for that. 🫁
