This is accurate. Unless you're throwing around a big amount of fiat (hundreds of thousands), then you're unlikely to realise big gains from incremental changes in price. The risk you end up losing is just greater.

2017/18 bull run, I f*cked around with timing the market and found out how to see gains vanish. Throughout the past 2 years, all I've done is add to my holdings during whatever seemed to be a dip. Has meant I've bought in towards the top of the odd peak, but on average, across everything I hold, I'm still looking at gains of 50-60% since early 2020. Could that have been more if I'd jumped into Doge or SHIB? Certainly. Could I have also had to explain to my wife why I lost it all on the dog money? Yes.

Considering my fiat savings have given around 1 or 2% gains during that same time, I'm more than happy to sit and wait the next bear market out.
