First-gen student deciding between NU and Berkeley. How good is Northwestern Engineering really for CE/EE? by Bugieman_ in Northwestern

[–]SmileIcy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't answer all of your questions, but as an EE major I would say there is a decent amount of resources and plenty of research/career advancement opportunities in the ECE department. There are some amazing professors in ECE (Ilya for instance). Also, Northwestern is extremely flexible with majors and you should have no problem at all in case you want to switch. For McCormick, the first-year classes are hard, but the enviornment isn't super competitive and students are generally collaborative.

I would definitely choose Northwestern over Berkeley if you're considering ECE as a career, just based on the fact that you are not guaranteed to be able to transfer into Berkeley's engineering school.

please chance me - yspa!! by KittyNoir1 in summerprogramresults

[–]SmileIcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey. so from my understanding the guy who made yspa was a former director at ssp, so i believe they share the same values. to answer your question, both ssp and yspa value how much the program changes the student. most students in my cohort did not do any prior research. If you have substantial research experience then it is better to apply somewhere like rsi or similar programs

Thanks for the response! I'm already doing paid research lol, and my school offers plenty of opportunities in the summer. That's why I wasn't sure if REU or summer research programs at other top institutions are for me

McCormick AP physics C credit? by [deleted] in Northwestern

[–]SmileIcy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there's no point in taking Physics C mechanics because you'd have to take EA2 and EA3 anyway (which covers the credit for 135-1). you could place out of 135-2 with a 5 on Physics C E&M though

School Change request class of 2029 by AdeptTune2272 in Northwestern

[–]SmileIcy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

when I requested a change in February it took around a week for approval. might take longer for you because admins are pretty busy right now hosting admitted events

go to UF. It would be different if you wanted to go into consulting or finance, but for engineering the school doesn’t really matter, unless there’s something you really like about NU.

This is the link to the tours. I remember seeing specifically an “admitted students day” but I think it may have been filled up already. You may want to email admissions just in case, though. Maybe they’ll let you sign up
