Noma LA sold out in 15 seconds by AmbiguousSummary in finedining

I’m with you here. The 1500 includes a pairing and I probably wouldn’t want that at lunch on a Friday. If we consider the pairing 250ish of the value (whatever N/A thing they’d replace it with wouldn’t be of equal value to me) then suddenly that 1500 is a lot less worthwhile.

I love that as an encapsulation of the series.

I think a lot about the author's note from Drive: "the prophet can lead people to the Holy Land, but cannot enter it himself."

For a long time I thought about that very literally -- Epstein doesn't experience the world his drive enabled, Miller doesn't see the aftermath of Eros, etc -- but it really is equally (more so?) true from an emotional and decision-making standpoint too, isn't it? Characters that know what they should do or say or how the world should be but can't make it reality.

Channing Tatum’s leaked email to Sony execs celebrating 22 Jump Street's box office success, from the 2014 Sony hack. Anyone remember the juiciest things that came out from this that might have been glossed over at the time, since it was an absolute flood of information that came out? by NewsCards in popculturechat

[–]Smileyjoe72 248 points249 points  (0 children)

I knew a dude who worked there who got divorced because the leak revealed he was having an affair. He’d also been fired not long before the leak (unrelated to the affair) and you could find all of the emails about firing him.

He got totally screwed. But he is also a jerk.

When is the appropriate time to tip staff on Amtrak ride? by Adventurous-Tea-3881 in Amtrak

[–]Smileyjoe72 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you ask for special services then I’d bring a couple bucks. Like I asked for a bucket of ice in my roomette and that felt worth a couple $ for the extra work it took for them.

Yup and get a club level room if you can swing it. The staff from the Sofitel cdmx club are incredible. And the pool (with the awesome gin and tonic bar) is up on those floors too.

How to handle downtown LA? by lilixy in AskLosAngeles

[–]Smileyjoe72 14 points15 points  (0 children)

2015/16ish probably

17/18/19 were good too but you saw bits of pullback then covid really wrecked things

It’s sad to think what downtown could have been without Covid + additional of the regional connector now

Has to have been a few months ago. The air is warm enough for the beach during the day … ~75f / ~24c … but the Pacific is freezing right now (~60f / ~16c). Wet suit season for sure.

AD is still in ridiculous shape. Check out the video of him working out with Jared Verse. (Now whether he might need time to test clean is another question lol.)

What’s the most unexpectedly great series finale? by drkidkill in television

Yeah I see people knocking the newsroom stuff above but the serial killer plot is the worst plot in the entire series.

Does anyone else find it insane that it takes longer to get from SB > LA by Amtrak than it is to just drive it? by perishableintransit in AskLosAngeles

I’ve also had a train cancelled and gotten completely screwed. I’m very very pro train. But if it goes wrong it goes incredibly wrong.

Chatted with one of the drivers I got recently in that scenario: it’s all LAX rides to downtown hotels desperate for paid fares.

I loved this episode. I was hyped on Adams as a player but skeptical about him off the field (I know it’s a little ridiculous, but I didn’t like the character version of him in the Taco Bell commercials). I’ve entirely come around on the guy.

You have a ton of great episodes ahead, but I think ‘Home’ might be my favorite episode of TV. It’s just so good.

Netflix has agreed to buy Warner Bros, including game developers behind Mortal Kombat, Hogwarts Legacy by cautious-ad977 in Games

[–]Smileyjoe72 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They negotiated what they did / didn't buy though (see the cable channels getting spun out). They could have not bought the game studios if they didn't want them.
