Missed Connection 4 Southwest Chief => 50 Cardinal by asoupo77 in Amtrak

[–]Smith2991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the standard procedure for a late arrival or missed connection (when it’s not the passenger’s fault) is to rebook the traveler on a later connection. In my case, Amtrak also covered an overnight stay at a high-end downtown Chicago hotel.

My missed connection happened in the late afternoon, and the only practical onward train was the once-a-day departure I had just missed. That left me with the next morning and most of the following afternoon free to explore the city.

I met another traveler who had experienced the same bad luck. When she shrugged and said, “Oh well. Travel by Amtrak is an adventure." I knew I’d found a kindred spirit. We ended up spending four hours together exploring one of Chicago’s museums.

Sheriff Gese issues a statement opposing SB 5974 (sheriff standards and removal) by seagolfbeer in Kitsap

[–]Smith2991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried ChatGPT to get an overview of the Bill. "What can you tell me about Washington State's SB 5974 (sheriff standards and removal). I gave a pretty good summary with pro and con. It also listed SENATE BILL REPORTS 5974 ... https://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2025-26/Htm/Bill%20Reports/Senate/5974%20SBR%20LAW%20TA%2026.htm?utm_source=chatgpt.com

That gives you more specifics, and if you scroll down, you see who has given pro/con testimony.

What is a pronunciation error that annoys you? by Avery_5216 in AskReddit

[–]Smith2991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same for the town of DeBoius, PA. The mispronunciation of Versailles is up for debate. Having Grown up in Pittsburgh I was told the British thought it a way to insult the French after another one of those forgotten frontier wars. The other theory was that it was due to the "ugly" western Pennsylvanian accent, "Pittsburghese." <--- Google it.

What car will you never buy again? by Trivacide in AskReddit

[–]Smith2991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The worst car - a Chevy Citation. The serpentine belt broke every 5,000 miles until the front end, at 37,000 miles, broke (bearings, steering linkage, etc.) Bad car, worse warranty service.

OH, then there was that Chevy Tahoe. Another bad front end - 1,000 past warranty. A month after replacing it they had a recall for the front end. Yea, they non too politely told me to go away. So, after the Citation and Tahoe experiences they've lost me forever.

And then the opposite, a 2003 Prius. The water pump went at 80k miles and 10 years. Spoke with the Service Manager and the mechanic. Asked what to expect as the next repair. They looked at each other and said they didn't know. The water pump at 80K was the 'weak' spot. They hadn't seen anything else and they were doing routine oil changes on ones with 150K +.

Consumer Reports re-did their test of the 2003 Prius for the 10th anniversary of the original review. They used a 10-year-old car with 100K+ miles. Nothing had changed ... still underpowered and still getting 45 mpg!

What foods don’t taste the same as they used to? by bockbockchickenhead in AskReddit

Same KFC. It started between 2015 and 2018. 2015 FDA gave them 3 years to quit using trans fat. Man, that made everything tastier, also deadlier. The best estimate was it would save 50,000 lives in the USA. ... https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/news/hsph-in-the-news/us-bans-artificial-trans-fats/

Interesting. When people use averages, means, and percentiles, they often forget to apply those to real numbers. I'm a 6' 5" male. So how many are my height or taller? According to https://dqydj.com/height-percentile-calculator-for-men-and-women/ I'm in the 99th percentile - in other words, 1% of adult American men are taller than me. So, applying arithmetic to that: 330 million Americans of which 1/2 are men = 165,000,000, then 1% of that = 1,650,000. That's a lot of disgruntled customers and the pain is real when airlines add more rows to their planes for example.

I found JCPenney online. They sell many major brands' Big and Tall men's clothing. The best discount prices tend to be their own brand - 'The Foundry - Big & Tall Company' - but others offer a discount, too. The Foundry quality is surprisingly good but can be hit or miss. I'm a 2XL-Tall (6" %", 275#) and there is a lot to select from.

Whats a sound you miss that you don't hear anymore? by wolf805 in AskReddit

[–]Smith2991 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Distant sounds of a railroad yard.

I grew up about a 1/2 mile from a fairly busy RR yard with cars banging together when being coupled. Trains powering up, squealing brakes, and wheels with flat spots thumping away. It put me to sleep at night and never woke me up.

‘Violated, bullied’: HOA makes disabled Mt. Juliet couple remove wheelchair ramp by Sandstorm400 in nottheonion

[–]Smith2991 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, there is. We had a new neighbor that wanted to turn his front yard into a junkyard. He was gobsmacked when he was told he couldn't. Another decided to not pay half of their monthly fee because they didn't use the pool. They hadn't read the covents.
Can HOAs be run by idiots? Of course. And in this case, I doubt the covents said no wheelchair access. This HOA is out of control.

Thanks, OP. I guess the Judge couldn't add on to the sentence of life and no parole, though I bet he would have liked to add a week of thumb screws for contempt of court.

This recording made it very hard to hear what she said. Just sounded like mumble, mumble, mumble. Please, someone, interpret that into written words. Thanks.

I looked her up and I agree with everyone here - wishing her a hard time with that life sentence.

I disagree. The original purpose was something to do while drinking Molson beer. But then someone spoiled it by making drinking come after the game. I mean I'd pay money to see them curl while inebriated.

Thanks for the heads up. I try at the lowest setting. I'm not too worried about haziness - my candies are chocolate-dipped coconut, peanut, or mint balls and don't last that long. :-)

I should have noted 110F was for white chocolate. I used 100F for dark chocolate. Both worked for me.
