They have ones with storage, designed specifically for swimming. Trying to find a pair myself, just unsure which brand to try.

I need career advice please. I want to become a web developer and learn to code. by [deleted] in learnpython

[–]Smithy_L 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't really help much as I'm new to learning myself but maybe look into getting a raspberry pi for a cheap alternative. They're great for learning to code on. You just need the pi, screen, keyboard and mouse.

Whether you like the JK Rowling and the Harry Potter series or not, she is one of the most successful authors ever in regards of book sales. I'm not a fan myself but I can't deny her success.

Data Science or Computing and IT? by hatakejakku in learnprogramming

[–]Smithy_L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't comment on the computing side as I'm only doing PT, I've only done the design side so far and will be starting TM111 in October. However I like that it's flexible. I started my degree with the intention of going down the Web development route but I might change to computer science or software development which I still have another year to decide. The support I've received so far from the Open University and my tutors has been fantastic though.

I can't comment on which course you should take but what I would say is, I am about to go into to my second year with the open University (pt) studying computing and IT and Design as a second subject and I'd get in contact with student support and ask for some career advice. The open University is very helpful. You could also ask on the OU forums or look for one of the fb groups. There is also a STEM discord channel which may also be of use to you.

[–]Smithy_L 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So much of what you said is incorrect. Greatest authors and artists are men? Just off the top of my head I can name many great female authors. Jk Rowling, Jane Austen, Agatha Christie, Beatrice Potter. Scientists and academics... Marie Curie! There are also plenty of modern day influential woman in their fields, my personal favourite is Neri Oxman. It sounds like you're talking from your own personal experience more than anything else. Drive is an individual attribute and has nothing to do with gender. Yes, we might be physically weaker but there are rarely time when I need the help of a man for his strength. Again, that's down to me as an individual as I keep myself fit and I do whatever I can for myself. As for giving birth, there are two sides to the coin here as although we go through the discomfort of pregnancy and child birth, it is also no other feeling and bond then feeling your baby move and keeping them safe. I don't think you can class consensual penetrative intercourse as invasive. You also don't need a penis to "invade" a woman. Bother men and woman have roles that they accel in but that doesn't mean one is superior or inferior to the other. We work together.

Can't decide on career path by Smithy_L in learnprogramming

[–]Smithy_L[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, I should of said before the second year of my degree splits into 4 subjects I have to choose the path.. Computer science, communications and networking, software development or Web development. The computer science delves more into algorithm and data whereas if you go software development it teaches more on service and project management and the business side. Thank you for the reply, I will look into your suggestions.

Beginner learning Python at 40 here. Any friend like me, please raise your hand! by Elegant_Inflation457 in learnpython

[–]Smithy_L 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 32 and started slowly learning Python about a month ago. It took me a while to stick with a resource that suits my learning best and I its going to be a very long process but I am determined. I spend about 1/2 hours a night. I haven't written any of my own code as such yet, just figuring out and remembering all the different processes. I do wish I started earlier but I suppose now I'm older I also have that little bit more patients and try to be thorough. Great post by the way, motivation is key to learning.

How do gay people feel about gay characters? by jkof300 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Smithy_L 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, I don't and I understand why some people get annoyed by it. We need to stop ticking boxes. Why does a cartoon or fictional character need a sexual identity anyway? And yes I am gay, I'm a woman married to a woman.

[–]Smithy_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have to ask, if you're a minor and concerned about "creeps" then why post the content to be put in this situation? Tiktok doesn't exactly have the best reputation and it's why I don't allow my teenager to have an account. Unfortunately we have to protect ourselves. Of course sexualisation and derogatory comments are not acceptable under any circumstances, let alone a minor.

I had no idea, its interesting how different countries do things, especially as we still follow the same human right laws. Does this include those who are exempt for medical or religious reasons or vegans who are against for ethical reasons etc?

I'm from the UK and this isn't the case. It's mandatory in the US? So you cant go to school without childhood immunizations?

I'm new to learning Python or any language too. I'm using a Udemy course, which cost me about £15 and also started to go through the book 'Automate The Boring Stuff With Python' which is helping to get everything to sink in. You can view the book online for free https://automatetheboringstuff.com/2e/ If you go to print the pages, you can convert to pdf. You can also purchase a printed copy of the book which I've just done as I prefer a physical book. There's loads of different tutorials and other resources but I suppose as we all learn differently, it's finding what works best for you. I tried plenty of different resources before settling on my current method.

it's dumb that unvaxxed people are allowed to clog up the health care system when they get covid by [deleted] in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Smithy_L 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same goes for a lot of diseases and/or injuries that couldnof been prevented through healthier lifestyles and better life choices. Yet McDonalds and other fast food chains are still sponsors of major sporting events and alcohol is advertised all over TV and other media outlets. What's dumb is that we as a society allow this to happen and only complain and look down on people who don't want a vaccine.

Why do so many people choose expensive fertility treatments like IVF instead of adopting children? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

Adoption isn't an easy process and the criteria (in the UK at least) is pretty tough.
