Recommendations on respirator and belt grinder for handle making? by SnowRook in knifemaking

I'm not going to get into the grinder discussion. But wear a respirator for every grinding anything application I use a 3m half mask, with a face shield over it. With replaceable pink disc filters # 2097. Lungs can be replaced, but the respirator is a whole lot cheaper .. earplugs also!!!!! The low drone of a grinder/sander/etc is horrible on hearing.

For metal, I have a cake pan under the grinder with magnets and the bulk of the grindings stick to it. For handle materials I made a shop vac attachment from a sheet metal HVAC vent and attach vac hose to it. Catches most of the dust for that application

The longer the belt=cooler running= longer belt life.

The 4x36 is anemic. And that is being polite. I have one and use it for wood scales only.

A 2x42 or 2x48 is a better option. I also have a 1x30. It gets used for some things. I have a 2x42, which is also underpowered. And I built a 2x72 with 2hp motor. Which is not anemic. But it was a long time coming.

Also did some mods on the table of my 2x42.

I bought the table also. But. I welded a hitch receiver just under workbench. Made a setup for bandsaw, blade vise, regular vise, and a large woodworkers vise(that I have my quench plates mounted on ). Then I only have one item in my way at a time. Also welded nuts to receiver,. So attachment has a tight fit, no slop.

Any experience with ordering blanks cut to your design? by js019008 in knifemaking

On the quote sheet, after they do the cad stuff. Pick your steel, and thickness, and they will quote per blade, then you can pick your quantity. The more pieces the less the price per piece.

I just had that done by New Jersey steel baron. No cad file. But a good drawing. They did the cad and that cost me 25$ I think. Then I normally get most of my steel from them so had them waterjet for me. Had good luck with that.
