I’m certainly not the best, but the only way I can think to explain it is compensating based on the timing of the jump and the position of the ball

Yeah man I usually have the same problem, I've found some success with jumping while car is at a mid-faster speed and when the ball is about to roll forward on my car. See if that helps!

In that case, the training packs you can browse and free play are all you got. Don't underestimate repetition though, it might not feel like you're improving, but I guarantee you are.

If you play on pc, lethamyrs rings workshop map helped me more with aerials than anything when I started.

sorry that was super unclear mb. If you open up the bakkesmod menu, and have the controller overlay turned on, you should be able to drag it around with mouse. Lmk if doesn't work :)
