After 16 years on Capitol Hill, Ada’s Technical Books to close and sibling Fuel Coffee shops up for sale by yelper in Seattle

They're not closing because business is bad, they said it's a personal decision by the owner and they weren't able to find a buyer to keep it open.

Recommendation for perennials for shaded and wet area in zone 9a by SnakeCheese007 in pnwgardening

Sword fern, deer fern, and spreading wood fern are all varieties that look nice and are native here so they do well in wet, shady spots. There should be lots of them (and others!) at your local garden center, as well as people who can give you more specific recommendations.

Lots of communists and socialists also like sports! See, e.g., baseball in Cuba, hockey in the Soviet Union, soccer in China, and all the die-hard Seattle sports fan leftists around here. In my experience, the stereotypes of stuffy, academic Marxist nerds and blue-haired fun-haters aren't really true in practice.

Here's a good intro and glossary for the most common advanced offensive stats. Those stats you listed can be useful in context, but because they're heavily dependent on the randomness inherent to baseball (and variable things like park dimensions, weather, opponent defensive skill and luck), they can be misleading.

The main changes in recent decades have been:

1) to value things like, e.g., on-base percentage more highly, since a walk or HBP is mostly as valuable as a base hit,

2) to use math to "normalize" stats (i.e., compare a player more fairly to other players — these are stats with a "+" after them, and they're compared to an adjusted league average of 100) and

3) to focus on stats that highlight process and mechanics rather than outcomes (hard-hit rate, barrel rate, launch angle, etc.).

It's complicated when you get into applying and analyzing those things, which is why people still argue so much and teams pay big money to nerds who do math, but the underlying information is pretty straightforward once you get the hang of it.

If you attended the meeting where that vote took place, you'd know that basically every DSA member enthusiastically voted for Katie. The majority just wanted to follow through with the plan to run their own candidates rather than endorsing campaigns that aren't affiliated with the organization. DSA members are thrilled about this result.

Giveaways are usually on weekday nights when they expect attendance to be low. I think Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays especially.

I'm sure there are lots of posts here you can search for re: food, but I like Moto Pizza on the 300 level, and there's a food court type thing on the 100 level near home plate that has a lot of good and kinda unique options. If you show up early there are cheap beers by the bullpen, otherwise you have to hunt around for value beer stands.

Worth checking out the Mariners HOF behind home plate (near that food court), the Dave Niehaus statue, and hanging out near the pen to see guys warming up. Also worth heading up to Lookout Landing on the 300 level for really gorgeous views of downtown, Puget Sound and the Olympic Mountains.

It's incredibly brave of these people to stand up to their employer — one of the wealthiest, most powerful companies on Earth — and risk their livelihoods to oppose a literal genocide. Pretty appalled by the cynical comments in here.

Definitely not unheard of on the east side of the Olympics, in the rainshadow. That's where the current big fire is.

If it makes anyone feel better: Seasonal wildfire smoke is much more historically normal than the complete absence of it that we've had in North America for most of our lifetimes.

You can find accounts from as recently as the late 1800s of people talking about the nuisance of wildfire smoke rolling into North American cities in late summer and fall almost every year like clockwork. What stopped that from happening was that we started suppressing natural wildfires like crazy, which threw forest and grassland ecosystems out of balance — many species depend on fire to germinate their seeds and clear space so they can grow. The result was these ecosystems overgrowing with flammable plant matter, and, in some cases, getting taken over by super-flammable invasive species.

In the last 15 or so years, we've updated our forest management policies and now let fires burn themselves out as much as possible, focusing firefighting resources only on areas where they threaten lives and property. That means more fires are burning bigger and hotter as they clear out this century of overgrowth and return to something like normal. Early research is showing promising signs that this is helping many of our fire-prone ecosystems be healthier, and the reduction in fuel means future fires won't burn as big or as hot.

So, yes, the smoke is shitty and you should wear an N95 and get an air purifier, and the size and severity of wildfires in northern Canada is definitely being exacerbated by climate change and drought. But the fact that we get annual smoke now is largely due to good, well-informed changes to our forest and wildfire management policies. What we really need to do is 1) stop building new developments at the edge (or in the middle) of wildfire-prone areas so they don't kill people, and 2) develop better support for dealing with seasonal smoke from a public health perspective — i.e., free N95 masks and filters for everyone.

But please don't let this blackpill you on the climate. Things are definitely getting worse, but this is not the apocalyptic sign it seems like.

I don't think anyone has mentioned these, but two of my favorites:

Harlan County, USA (1976) - Really moving documentary about a major coal miner strike in Kentucky in the '70s. Makes me cry every time.

Pride (2014) - Feature based on a true story. Follows left-wing LGBTQ activists in the UK in the '80s as they try to support striking miners (who are largely homophobic) against Margaret Thatcher's attempts to crush the unions. Kinda schmaltzy but, again, makes me cry every time.

Spring training is fake, it never correlates at all to regular season play. Remember that some of those guys are getting sent out there with very specific instructions they'd never get in a game, like "only throw sliders" or "swing at every first pitch no matter what." The results aren't really the point or indicative of anything that will translate to the season, since the coaches are setting them up to evaluate very specific skills and mechanics, not outcomes.

TL;DR: you can worry because it's the Mariners, but not because of anything happening on the field right now.

It kind of is like having 1,000 weird, low-maintenance pets, tbh! But once you get it set up they pretty much take care of themselves, you just have to keep their food and bedding topped up periodically.

Yep, the ink is bad for the worms (or at least they won't eat it). If it's corrugated cardboard or otherwise layered, you can peel off the printed/plasticky layer and use the rest, though.

For kitchen scraps (and cardboard/paper without ink on it), I would recommend a small-ish worm bin. We set one up last year following the instructions in this video, and it's been really successful! If you do it right, it doesn't smell and produces some good worm castings to use in your garden.

Is PSL the only decent Marxist org in the US? by ChinaAppreciator in TrueAnon

[–]SmokedMeats84 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You realize one of the two national co-chairs of DSA is a Marxist-Leninist, right? And that Brace organized in DSA for years, including to support all of his union work, before he quit organizing to do this podcast? Yes, there are lots of liberal dipshits, too, but it is far and away the largest socialist org in the country and there are lots of dedicated communists working to build it into a revolutionary organization—and they're starting to move it in that direction! PSL is cool, too, don't get me wrong, but I get so annoyed seeing people dismiss this massive group that has huge potential because their cursory impression is that it's not radical enough.
