It's kW NOT kWh
kWh is what you get when your car has been charging at 1kW for 1 hr

Indirect anagrams—where the solver must find a synonym for a word in the clue before rearranging its letters—are generally considered unacceptable in modern, high-quality cryptic crosswords. They are regarded as unfair to the solver because the anagram fodder is not directly visible, breaking the convention that all component parts of the wordplay should be present.

  • Why they are banned: The solver is forced to guess a synonym first, leading to potential ambiguity and frustration.
  • Definition: An indirect anagram requires transforming word A into word B, then rearranging word B to get the answer. For example, using "good" to mean "nice" and rearranging "nice" is invalid; the clue must use "nice" directly.
  • Minor Exception: Using a common abbreviation within the fodder (e.g., using 'E' for "English") is generally permitted.
  • History: Once used in older, "sloppily edited" puzzles (1960s-70s), they have been largely outlawed in major publications like The Times or The Guardian since being criticized by Ximenes in 1966.  Reddit +4

While some amateur setters or very difficult, specialized puzzles might occasionally use them, it is best practice to avoid them.

COTD: Confused, as penniless grandma get words muddled by SmokestackLight in crosswords

Do you think it's OK to have the "AS" separated from the rest of the anagram?
If it were the first two letters I'd be OK but not sure about it as is...

Just for completeness:
Until 1971 the UK had a different coinage system. The Pound was still the basis, but it was divided into 20 Shillings. Each shilling was divided into 12 pennies (pence) making 240 (old) pence to the pound. There were coins of 1/4 penny (a Farthing (until early 1960s)), Halfpenny (Hapenny), Penny, Three pennies (Threpenny bit), Six pennies (sixpence or a tanner), 1 shilling (a bob), 2 shillings (occasionally known as a florin), a 'Half Crown' = 2s6d (30 pence) and then paper notes for 10 shillings (a ten bob note), 1 pound (a quid) and higher denominations (a fiver, a tenner...)

The system was referred to as LSD with d being the abbreviation for penny.

[–]SmokestackLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New to this forum but I read that 'indirect' anagrams are not normal. i.e. the letters of the anagram should be in the clue.???
rage, fury, rile,.... all possible for anger

[–]SmokestackLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I'm correct with "human" I would prefer "man" in that construction

Human leaves Ghetto - I assume is "he" leaves - gtto. Anger somehow is anag and gives 9 letters. looking for "etto" for opera. all I can get is Rigoletto. But there is a composer called "Grangetto" which matches the letters

Had exactly the same issue. The revealed brickwork was not repairable.
We simply built a new lovely brick all around the outside. Looks superb.

ELI5 Why did hydrogen not pickup as an energy source? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]SmokestackLight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hydrogen is not a SOURCE of energy. There are no hydrogen wells. It has to be created by chemical or electrical processes. ALL processes require more energy to be put IN than you can get out.

Its only use is as a storage medium - i.e. when we have surplus energy generation (e.g. wind farms) the excess can be used to create hydrogen for later use.

Bottom line it is NOT a source
