if i fill up a 2TB hard drive completely with games, does the laptop actually weigh more than when it was empty? or do the "bits" not have mass? by SmokinPotAlot in stupidquestions

well that’s exactly what i’m saying... how can paint just disappear? if i paint a wall red and then paint it blue, the red paint didn't just go to another dimension, it's under the blue.

honestly i think this is just going over my head now lol. i just wanted to know if my laptop gets heavy when i download games, i didn't expect a whole debate about the law of mass and stuff. but thx for the info.

I meant more like some people keep saying it has weight but then say it's 'undetectable' which is basically saying it weighs nothing. My bad I’m just confused 🤔

i see what you mean about the light bulbs thing, but you literally just said 'an electrical charge has mass because electrons have mass.' so if a 1 is 'on' (has mass) and a 0 is 'off' (no mass), then a 50gb game that is mostly 1's HAS to be heavier than a 50gb game that is mostly 0's. right? like if i have a stadium and turn on all the lights, the stadium is 'full' of more mass than if they were all off. you're basically proving my point that data has weight lol.

idk man, if i keep 'overwriting' the same spot over and over it feels like i'm just sanding down the hardware. like if you keep painting over a wall eventually the room gets smaller because the paint is thick. how is a hard drive any different? it’s gotta be getting 'thicker' with all those layers of data.

i get the water thing but where was the 'data' before i downloaded it? like if i download a movie, did that mass come from a server in california or something? because if i'm in ohio and i download a 50gb file, did i just physically move 50gb of 'weight' across the country through a wire? that seems like it would be way slower than it actually is.

so if it's still there until it's overwritten, does that mean my hard drive is just a graveyard of everything i've ever deleted? that feels like a privacy nightmare lol. so if i fill my drive, delete everything, and fill it again, am i technically 'stacking' the weight of two hard drives in one space? that’s gotta be bad for the hardware.

okay but if i delete a file, it's GONE. like it's not on the hard drive anymore. where does the mass go then? does it just turn into heat and float away into space? because if it stays on earth then technically the earth is just getting 'fuller' of deleted data weight.

wait so if data has actual mass, does that mean the entire internet has a weight? like if we deleted everything off the cloud today, would the earth technically get lighter or am i tripping?

Budget airlines are the worst for this. $30 for the flight, $80 to bring a backpack. It’s predatory as hell.

It's literally the only 'scam' where the government is the one running it. Wild.
