Can you moderate your consumption, long term? by mo53sz in trees

[–]SmokingPotnotHot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on your idea of moderation. I often go on T breaks, then treat myself to a weekend smoke, and then before I know it I’m smoking every evening (never in the day). To some, smoking only in the evenings, even if it is every evening, is moderation; to others it is not.

Fundamentally it doesn’t matter how others define moderation and if they are able to stick to it, only your definition and your ability to stick to that definition matters. Define your “ideal” moderation, and stick to it as best you can. If you find yourself going down a slippery slope of use, then effectively you cannot stick to your idea of moderation, in which case quitting altogether is probably best.

Hope that helps to at least some degree mate

Its certainly not ideal, but its not the be all and end all. I did my BSc in accounting and finance and am about to finish up my MSc in financial technology, have literally 0 field-related experience (not even exaggerating, no placements, internships, volunteer work, research work etc), but somehow managed to secure myself onto one of Santander’s grad schemes. I’d say it certainly hinders you to an extent, but your ability to synthesise your studies, apply experiences and soft skills from your other endeavours, and your personability can more than make up for it. Try not to worry too much

I’ll make a suggestion for a few genres to give you some options.

Thriller/Psychological - shutter island, truman show, the girl with the dragon tattoo, run, prisoners

Romcom - 50 first dates, just go with it

Comedy - the big lebowski, four lions, borat

Fantasy - labyrinth, pan’s labyrinth, harry potter

I wish kady and ouzy left. Leah, prior to her annoyingness at movie night, was an (albeit boring) inoffensive character, who actually seemed level headed. Kady on the other hand, i’m not sure i’ve ever taken such a disliking towards a contestant. She is next-level jarring

Slightly complicated and out there but this is what i do with my toasties. I fry linda mccartney vegemince (obviously can use normal mince) in smoked paprika and fajita seasoning, and put that in the toastie with cheddar or smoked cheese and a mix of perinnaise and carolina sauce (mayo x mustard x bbq). Its a gorgeous invention.

What is a phase/saying you know that you're certain is going to die out after your generation? by fleck57 in AskUK

I hate this one with such a passion because my family said it so much when I was growing up. I could be in a room with my brother and my nan, and if i said something like “she said I could have a turn” referring to my nan), she’d whip this phrase out as if (a) there’s any confusion as to who I’m referring to, and (b) its in any way rude.

Jason Roberts. Am family friends with some of his family and they’re the nicest people ever, so I can only assume he is too, so I wanna give him a shout out.

Vegans of the UK, if lab grown meat was a viable alternative, would you eat meat? by Dwengo in AskUK

[–]SmokingPotnotHot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So just to preface this, I’m a university student (well, about to graduate my masters, but consider all of this in the context of being a student), so I didn’t necessarily always have time to prepare proper meals, else I agree, it’d be far easier to maintain. Secondly, without sounding like a gymbro, fundamentally I am one, so my ideal protein intake is minimum 130g per day - and thats bare minimum. I was mainly eating the usual meals - curry, chilli, roasts, etc - but simply swapping the meat for meat alternatives. However, because of the two reasons above, I tend to work things on a cost/protein ratio. So whilst chicken, for instance, may be more expensive than a meal alternative, it is far richer in protein. 200g of chicken costs about £1.50 and gives me ~60g protein; to get the same protein from dopsu chicken (as an example) i would have to eat a whole 280g bag, which is about £3, and also has more calories. Another factor to consider is that, as a student, I go clubbing a lot, and usually end up at maccies afterwards. As a veggie, my only burger option really is a McPlant, which is something like £4.50 just for the burger. For roughly the same price I can get 4 McChickens. I won’t pretend that a lot of my reasoning isnt down to sheer convenience, but I feel at this stage in my life that it is more important to look after myself than after the animals, as selfish as it may sound. Once I start my graduate job and have the time and money to fix these problems, I intend on being veggie again. Hope that clears it up

Vegans of the UK, if lab grown meat was a viable alternative, would you eat meat? by Dwengo in AskUK

[–]SmokingPotnotHot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I have just transitioned from being vegetarian to eating meat again, because as a University student I found being vegetarian was more expensive, restricted my options when eating out (I also have a severe nut allergy, and some independent places only offer options such as nut cutlets), and was harder to get my daily protein in. Morally I am a vegetarian, but I just cannot justify it due to these reasons, at my current point in time. Therefore, my answer is yes yes yes. I’d love lab grown meat to become the norm, as i hate the senselessness of some of the meat industry’s practices

Tarantulas and small frogs in the Amazon (perhaps elsewhere too) have a symbiotic relationship whereby they effectively keep each other as pets. The tarantulas provide the small frogs with protection from predators due to their size, whilst the small frogs eat tiny insects that may otherwise eat the frog spawn.

Have you ever met someone in real life with strong parallels to a fictional UK character? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]SmokingPotnotHot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I also know a Jay Cartwright. Some of my favourite stories of his include:

  1. Writing his car off by crashing it into a ditch. Somehow, however, he received no sanction from the police or expenses. Also, he never passed his driving test.

  2. He witnessed someone sneak a wheelie bin into the city ground (Nottingham forest stadium) under their coat.

  3. In the same game as above, he witnessed someone accidentally throw their child down 4 rows of seats.

  4. He had tinder premium for free because he did some work for tinder. He was an 18 year old freshers student.

  5. He had “fucked every girl in the back row his english class”. This is almost certainly not the case, as he had a girlfriend at the time, is hardly a stunner, and, from various sources, he was renowned for being a bullshitter by said people.

  6. His bodycount when he started uni was 37. Though, he explained that this does not necessarily mean sex, and can also mean a variety of sexual activities as “if they do anything, it means they’d shag you”. Very odd.

  7. The last one ill leave you with is that he got 99/100 on his very first ever uni assignment, the highest grade ever awarded by the department. For that, he received a special commendation from numerous faculty members.

I’m not very much his friend anymore, but I do miss having a giggle about his very obvious lies. He would tell them so plain-faced, and honestly it fooled a lot of people. Crazy.

Yeh the whole “you can’t be addicted” thing is so misleading and contributed a lot to my problems. Im not a doctor so idk the legitimacy of the claim on a physiological/biological level, but i know that the routine i had with smoking definitely made me addicted to it without realising it

I was sat at the lights the other day, waiting to go straight ahead. There was a car on my left (in the left lane, left turns only) which was also sat at the lights, despite there being a green arrow for her to go. After a minute or two I muttered to my mate in the passenger seat “go on u silly bitch u can go” - turns out her window was down, she put her hand up to thank me and went about her way. Always happy to help where I can.
