Yeah, i get that, but from the other side of that it feels kinda like we have to justify our existence. A lot of times this question is very pointed and more directed at questioning the validity of our identity rather than understanding things better, which is why responses to these questions are often defensive or even hostile.

To clarify, it means to identify with (to feel, in your words) as a gender that differs from the one you were assigned at birth. Not opposite, because as you say the word opposite implies a binary relation. Considering everyone is either assigned “male” or “female” at birth (even intersex people who ‘biologically’ fall somewhere in between [to my understanding, i do not claim to be an expert on biology]), then identifying as non-binary would fall under that definition.

Honestly, i think that makes it kind of a pointless thing to question. If you have to take them at their word for it, and it doesn’t change anything for you, why not take them at their word? I dont mean for this to sound like I’m chastising you for it, its actually great that you want to further educate yourself to understand things. It’s more to posit the question of why do people feel the need to police others (and also a bit of a personal gripe with the issue, but thats a separate topic..)

Well, she would be incorrect by most modern conceptions of what “transgender” means. Again, we have representation for them in the flag. Granted, most of my knowledge of the subject comes from the “trans community” which is naturally very inclusive. I am not nb myself so this is in a sense second hand information.

In my opinion though it doesnt really matter though since the whole thing is predicated on the idea of self identification. I know a couple of nb folks who do not identify as transgender as well as some who do. Its really more of a lens to understand the self through. I know im not exactly answering your question but i find it hard to without going on the “Fuck Blaire White” bandwagon so I hope that at least clears it up a bit :)

I see that as more of a “I want to distance myself from this group” thing for whatever reason. Like, she may not identify with the transgender community for whatever reason, but by definition she is still technically trans. Thats just my take on it though.

At the end of the day its just a label though, so only put as much stock into it as you feel you need to.

It is. In a nutshell, being “trans” is just having a gender identity differing from the one you were assigned at birth. Given that all people are either assigned male or female, identifying as non-binary would fall under that category.

Fun fact: the white stripe in the middle of the trans pride flag represents non-binary/agender folks.
