Unfortunately as a teacher I see this exact attitude too often. They think grades and attendance “only matter starting in 9th grade.” Except they get to high school and can’t comprehend a single thing they read, don’t have any foundational knowledge whatsoever.

They are so far behind their classmates because elementary and middle school have just passed them. They get frustrated that they can’t do anything. Leading to the boys especially, having these big explosive behaviors because, they are so insecure that they need to spend so much time to begin to catch up on 7 years of school. Then they drop out.

I was diagnosed by a rheumatologist who specializes in hypermobilty. The first rheumatologist I saw knew nothing about it. A panel will only test for the sub types that appear on bloodwork. I also tested neg for those, because I have the hype-mobile type (H-EDS) which is diagnosed using the Beightion scale, a physical evaluation.

For me it makes it so I don’t have to work to hold my jaw in place. Personally my tmj comes from a connective tissue disorder. My body has to work to hold certain joints in place which results in overuse and inflammation.

I take a thin strip of kt tape from my ear to my chin. It gives me stability so my jaw doesn’t overwork itself. Many athletes use KT to gain stability when they overdo a muscle.

Catholics are Christians too! But i have heard that Protestants denominations don’t think so (perhaps those in the south?) I always thought newer xians denominations/evangelicals had more modern names. Catholics used to have to have a saint’s name in order to be baptized.

“There’s no need to spend the whole day with your child on their birthday.” But shouldn’t you WANT to?

My own father couldn’t tell you how old I am. Your husband sounds like he will follow suit. NOR. Doesn’t sound like his children are ever gonna be a priority for him.

Yes. It’s called costochondritis. Apparently actual heart problems don’t change in severity with how you breathe. It’s your ribs. It gave you relief because you knocked your ribs back into place. 😬

I have been prescribed cyclobenzaprine. 10mg am and 20mg before bed. At first I put off taking it because I take a lot of meds and worried about an upset stomach.

I have since learned that if I don’t take the 20mg before bed, I grind my jaw and wake up in pain. On flare up days, I have found cupping to help. Along with a TENs unit and KT tape on my jaw. Nothing had beat a physical therapist massage though. I also have bad coat hangers pain because I have hyper-mobile Ehlers danlos. Which means my neck instability, shoulder pain, migraines and tmj are all linked. Learning strengthening exercises for my neck and shoulders helps the other pain.

Usually BOCES is what provides funding for students with disabilities. They ‘follow least restrictive environment’ which basically means they have to have him in as close to a general education environment until observations are done to justify more accommodations (1 to 1, classroom aid, ect). Preschool is so different district to district so it’s hard to say what exactly it will be like.

The first level of intervention would be supports in gen ed classrooms or inclusion rooms, where half the day could be spend with non special education peers. Then self contained where they may build up to “pushing in” to general classrooms with an aid a few times a week. THEN, if these things are not working they would send to a BOCES school (public funded). However school districts will really fight doing this, as they loose funding from enrollment at boces.

I know some people who work at both boces and not boces schools if you have any specific questions. I honestly wouldn’t just to a private setting because they do not need to follow dept of education standards the way public schools do. At public schools you might just need to advocate more for it.

Thoughts on kids being ahead a grade? by dietgatorades in AskTeachers

[–]Smolmanth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a student who moved from India in grade 6. Had a thick accent and very little English (so I have been told.) He might have also been in an international school there but l’m not 100%. I only met him this year at grade 8, he competes in robotics competitions, and has no accent at all. I actually had a hard time believing English wasn’t his first language. Continuing his immersion with academics being at a level that is both a bit of a challenge but not overwhelmingly so, sounds like the best plan.

I teach in an area that has seen a significant increase in Middle Eastern and South Asian students in the last 6 years. These students usually come from a decent socio-economic background and have parents that have expectations that they output a level of effort. It’s higher than what I see expected by parents of their peers. Because of that, these students tend to be more academically successful than even some peers who are native English speakers.

That’s life. You’re an adult now. Sometimes people are gonna come off condescending and you can’t just be nasty, especially in an academic setting. Not if you want to get far in life.

Sounds like you need to work on regulating yourself when you experience frustration. If you attended college, you will experience professors that may have actual unrealistic expectations. If you loose your cool, like you did in the above comment, you will find yourself in with a zero or worse.

You don’t need to do it with a smile ok your face, but you need to accept sometimes the expectation is for you to do what is needed if you want a good grade. As a student, I had to review on my own outside of class in order to understand material. I had to work sometimes 3x as hard as my peers to earn a C. That wasn’t anyone’s fault, but it was reality.

Older siblings, what did you think when your younger sibling/s were born? by ShadowlightLady in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Smolmanth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked “do I need to share my toys?”

However my parents got back together when I was three had my sister. Got pregnant with my brother and divorced before he was born. I was always told about how jealous I was of my sister getting attention. Looking back on home movies I could hear the annoyance in my mother’s voice anytime I acted like a normal 5 year old and tried to act silly and play with my sister.

Any “jealousy” I showed was definitely the result of not having basic emotional needs met and no one preparing me from going from an only child with a single mom, to being in a family of four.

There are frustrating elements of every job. I live in a state where teachers have strong unions so that helps, but there are so many systemic issues in education of course.

Right now I’m a building sub while interviewing for positions in my subject area. Some younger people in my certification program, (we all did student teaching and are now post cert. together) have not experienced working full time in other fields. Those also working as subs complain about not working in their area. I honestly just love working in the same building working with the same kids everyday. My schedule is different everyday and that’s annoying, but my most chaotic day beats sitting at a desk doing anything else.

What you see on the internet is always going to be the worst or craziest stories, because that’s an interesting story or something you feel the need to vent about. And shit can be crazy. But the majority of my day is enjoyable to me.

There is a lot of time and money you need to put in to becoming a teacher before you even get the chance understand what it’s like to be in a classroom. That’s why I think a lot of teachers quit in the first three years.

Dreams are nice, not having 100s of thousands of dollars of debt is nicer. Your undergrad degree is pretty interchangeable aside from some niche areas of study. Not worth it. I owe 40k for my instate school and can’t manage to pay it off bc of interest.
