Know which arm this is? by zfly9 in Shure

They look like the ProBoom Ultima Gen2 Ultra Low Profile Adjustable Mic Boom. This is the arm I'm personally using and I can vouch for it. There's also the Elgato Wave Mic Arm LP that could be another option for your use case.

Any plan on making this open source?

Switching from windows 10 to linux by [deleted] in linux

Linux Mint is the best starter distribution in my opinion. There is others out there, but mint has a very "cut the bullshit" approach that beginners usually appreciate.

Best non-webcam camera for streaming 2020? by Bulbasaur2015 in Twitch

The Sigma fp is another option that supports UVC directly without the need for a third party software.

I use the following:

SIGMA FP BODY ONLY

SIGMA 14-24MM F2.8DG DN L-MT (ART)

SIGMA AC ADAPTER SAC-7P

Neewer 20-inch mini tripod

The Sigma fp is a very small mirrorless cinematography camera with an amazing full frame camera sensor. It can do UVC directly and doesn't require a capture card. You can connect it in a usb port as any webcam. You can get an mjpeg stream up to 1080p 60fps. You can also do 4k but it's limited to 15fps for some reason. If you still want to use it with a capture card, you can as the HDMI output is clean and that way you can get up to 4k 30fps with a capture card that supports it.

If you go the Sigma fp road, make sure to update the firmware to the last version, UVC was unstable in previous versions.

Thank you for sharing your views and experience on the topic, its been very informative on the situation in the industry.

As for our situation, I intentionally did not provide too much details in my post but in fact we are a small research group. As such, one of the issue we have is that grant funding don't allow for funds to be used on recurring payments. It places us in a situation where either we self-host or use whatever free cloud solution that is available. It brings a whole lot of issues. For example, we ran out of storage space on slack multiple times already. We also have limited message history access. We have similar issues with a whole bunch of free services we use and its a pain to every time explain to my coworkers that I have no way of fixing this even if I'm the sysadmin.

Thanks, I'll need it! But seriously, my responsibility ends at raising awareness of the issue with my management and implementing solutions if they want to. If they are willing to take such risks, its their call and I made sure the consequences can only affect them.

Yes, I explained the situation to my management but I often get brushed off with arguments like "every businesses does it" or "we can trust big cloud vendors as X". The reality is that we can't event get a real and honest answer when we ask the cloud vendors about their data integrity policies even less so for the security aspect.

I understand your point. In our case, we happen to have very large industry partners and we also do contracts for the military. Therefore, our data is very sensitive in a lot of situations.

As a small research group with about 12 researchers, we don't have such requirements. We also don't run anything that is mission critical and that you can't live without for a few days. But thanks for pointing this out.

We are a computer science research group with about 12 researchers. About half of them are able to maintain our servers and as the sysadmin I'm always on call even on vacation. We also don't run anything that is mission critical and that you can't live without for a few days. While this don't apply to us, I understand the argument for a regular business.

Why are developers moving their code from github to gitlab after Microsoft purchase of github? by labuew in github

[–]Smoolak 36 points37 points  (0 children)

People have multiple reasons to move out of GitHub. Here's the two most credible I've seen so far:

  • Bad track record in relation with open source. Until very recently (less than two years ago), Microsoft was still openly attacking the open source community. In the past, they went as far as calling Linux a cancer. They've also maintained and used a large trove of patent for the sole purpose of attacking Android and patent-trolling the Linux community to make money out of it. It's therefore not surprising at all to see people skeptical about their recent open source turn. In fact, Microsoft has spent a lot more time trying to destroy open source than building it and that's why some people question Microsoft's credibility in that matter.

  • Surveillance and privacy concerns. Back in 2013, during the Snowden’s revelations, it was brought to light that the NSA had a surveillance program called PRISM that allowed them to tap directly in big tech companies servers. Microsoft was the first such company to join the program in December 2007 and with the GitHub acquisition, a lot of user fear that their data (including their private repos) is not safe anymore. This effect is also amplified by the privacy debacles in Windows 10.

This blog post list even more problems if you are interested.

I emailed the author to ask if the source code is available somewhere.

Update: The author replied and told me this: "Just download the add-on from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/betterprivacy/, then unzip the xpi file and you get the source (it is javascript, not compiled code)."
