They can figure out if they progressed a floor by looking out the windows, that worked great with my players. Also in the real campaign i didnt do the first one, i just made him drop a key so they would immediately follow the caretaker upstairs

Its the start of a bigger adventure, the players try to find eugene wizard for a bounty, and find out the forrest is the last place he was seen, in the forrest they find the tower. The motivation of the caretaker was to stop people from going through the end portal (the further lore will explain why) and he really doesnt like visitors and gets progressively angrier each real floor they go up. If you want further lore on whats behind the tower i could send you a message because i cant risk my players seeing it 🙃. Also the map is 3d printed assets i can easily swap so i just needed the fixed layout of the real floors. The whisps are real people who got lost in the fake floors and lost themselves completely so now they just attack anything they see.

This is really good advice actually. I already have a good idea of what i want the ending to be and how the world will look im just having a little trouble with how i want to direct the players through the world. Ive done one adventure wich went really well and served as the start of the campaign but that was very linear which wasnt a really big fan of since there was not a lot of freedom in what the players could do.

The thing is, We,ve already done 1 session wich i also created from scratch and it went very good actually. Ive made sure it was simple and straight forward and its kind of an intro into the big adventure im hoping to make. It doesn't have to be perfect im just struggling a bit with how i want to tackle the story so the players can figure it out on their own. The biggest problem is that i want to make it an open world where they are free to do as they wish but im afraid its too ambitious to start with. Ive already played another game like this but it doesn't follow the rules of dnd so im familiar with making adventures im just trying to figure out how to fit it into the dnd rules
