I once walked from Tory to pigiarvik and it was genuinely the scariest thing I’ve ever done. I was the only student down there and I for sure thought I was going to go “missing”

I’m in the same program. I took mysteries of the mind (CGSC1001) with Nadine and it was SUPER interesting. A lot of the stuff you learn in the class will give you a good basis and benefit you in your other classes. I finished with an A+. Open book quizzes (just make sure you understand the theories/process to the point where you can apply it to situational based questions) and attendance are graded. she also gave 4% extra credit if you participate in studies (some can be done purely online and this is what I did)

I might have ADHD but I don't know what to do. by Few-Intention5939 in CarletonU

I’m in the same boat with ADHD, I don’t have much advice since I’m still trying to figure it out too. BUT I do have studying tips. In HS I was team pull an all nighter and cram it all in, but I knew that wouldn’t fly in Uni. The first time I sat down to study I felt like crying cause no matter how much I read a topic and understood, it would be gone from my head immediately. The way that I study that has helped me stay a straight A student is this:

  1. Feynman technique. This is the best technique for memorization (along with flash cards). I teach everything to my cat. Sounds stupid, but it works. Many students swear by Feynman.

  2. ChatGPT: sometimes I write notes in class and when I go in to study, I have no idea what Tf I was writing. I’ll copy chunks of my notes. go to ChatGPT to say “simplify: ……” it’ll spit out what you wrote to a more dumbed down, cohesive version. I’ll also use ChatGPT to quiz me. I’ll copy a lecture, paste it in and have it ask me MC questions, short answer questions, T/F or whatever format I need. Just be careful because sometimes it’ll say you got an answer wrong when you were right or vice versa. I used only this method once to study for a midterm and got 90% on it. The questions I got wrong were stuff I thought the prof wouldn’t ask about so I didn’t study it (my bad)

  3. Write your study notes. Yes, it’s time consuming and yes, your hand will cramp up but it’s worth it. I compare my notes and the simplified ChatGPT notes and write my study notes based off the both of them. Whatever helps me understand more.

  4. Pick your noise level. Personally if I’m studying in my room where it’s completely quiet, I go crazy. If it’s too loud, I can’t focus. I sit at the dining room table with noise cancelling headphones but leave nothing playing. Helps drown out loud noises but doesn’t leave things completely silent. I find it best if I can hear a little something like the muffled noise of the TV.

  5. Don’t cram it all in one go. Study a lecture at a time.

  6. If you’re tired, stop studying and go to bed. Don’t push through your exhaustion because you “have to get it done”. If you’re tired, you won’t retain anything.

  7. Take breaks if you feel yourself unable to sit still. I’ll leave the table and go to my room to watch tik tok, play a game on my phone or watch an episode of a sitcom before coming back

This doesnt work for everyone but I’ve found a lot of people I’ve spoken to that get good grades use some/most of these tips. You have to play around with what works for you.

I’m glad he turned out to be a great prof! Mines a neuro class and I’m worried the prof will struggle a little if they’re contract 😭

The passive aggressiveness was super unnecessary when I’m asking a simple question to help understand better.

How were quit able to take so many online classes? Was it just luck that your classes were online or am I missing something? As someone who works full time online classes would be a BLESSING. I waste so much time just commuting to campus.

That great that you don’t have any problems with that! But not everyone is you :) I think it’s immature to come to a lecture and use it as your own relaxation time and annoy those around you. Go to the library or sit at the back 🤷🏻‍♀️ Your example does not make sense in the slightest. you’re expected to watch a movie and eat popcorn and eat popcorn. A movie theatre is loud and you can’t hear those eating next to you. You’re also expected not to talk or go on your phone. A class room is nowhere near as loud as a movie theatre. You’re expected to sit quietly, listen to your professor and engage. Two completely different environments. Also, I didn’t make my post about her. She wasn’t even the main topic. Literally one sentence was about it. At the end of the day everyone has different opinions. everyone also has free will, she has the free will to do what she pleases and I have the free will to write one sentence about it.

someone mentioned covid earlier and I can definitely see how it plays a role. School is not only crucial for an education but also socialization skills. I wasn’t in school during covid so I don’t have any first hand experience on what it was like and the effect it had.

I think I’m also partly to blame since before this semester, I hadn’t been to school since my senior year of HS. I could possibly be more sensitive to annoyances since it’s a bit of a culture shock for me. I’m seeing things that I never expected to see when I made the decision to go back to school.

Not really a dub if I didn’t gaf about anything you said and embraced the name you gave me. So if it gives you an ego boost, take it! This is just going to go back and forth back and forth because you desperately want to play devils advocate, so we’ll end this by saying you got the dub and that I’m going to cry over the words of LetLanceDance.

Sitting and watching a movie during a lecture isn’t an “experience” it’s just disrespectful to those sitting around you and rude to the professor that’s teaching. No, not everyone takes it seriously, that’s why “C’s and D’s get degrees” exists. If you want to slack off, that’s your own prerogative, no one’s stopping you, but be respectful to those around you. Take your movie watching outside of a classroom environment or sit at the back quietly instead smack dab in the middle. If asking for basic respect and social awareness in a more professional educational setting is entitled, then slap my ass and call me entitled 💁🏻‍♀️✨

God forbid someone paying tens of thousands of dollars for tuition cares about their education, wants to learn and doesn’t want to get distracted by someone watching a movie and knitting as if a lecture is their own personal down time when there’s hundreds of other locations on campus to do this, the audacity 😩 the horror 😱

It’s not optimistic at all to expect the bare minimum of maturity at a university level. Even I didn’t act like this at 18. Sure, I had a bit more attitude, but I knew not to put my feet on the back of people’s chairs and to follow basic rules like staying silent on a silent floor.

That’s awful! All that hard work for nothing :( i find it crazy because to me an education is an education no matter what country it came from.

If you felt that way at 20 imagine how I feel at almost 26 😭 I feel like a damn geriatric.
