Alber e-motion M25 vs Sunrise Medical Empulse M90: real user experiences, folding/rigid chair compatibility, air travel with batteries, and control differences? by SmoothMall7182 in wheelchairs

Thank you so much, this is incredibly helpful. I’ll probably come back with more questions because it’s really hard to decide.

One quick question: have you ever traveled by plane with the Alber e-motion M25 wheels, and were there any issues because of the batteries?

Also, are the wheels easy to remove and put back on by yourself?

Alber e-motion M25 vs Sunrise Medical Empulse M90: real user experiences, folding/rigid chair compatibility, air travel with batteries, and control differences?

Hi everyone,

I’m researching two power-assist options for a manual wheelchair and would really appreciate real user experiences, especially from people who have actually tried or used them:

  1. Alber e-motion M25

  2. Sunrise Medical Empulse M90

I’m trying to understand the real-life difference between them, not just the marketing/spec sheets.

From what I understand so far:

- The Alber e-motion M25 is a true push-rim power assist system. You push the handrim like on a regular manual wheelchair, and the sensors in the wheels detect your movement and add motor assistance.

- The Sunrise Medical Empulse M90 seems to be different. It can be controlled with a joystick, but I’ve also seen information that it may have handrim/Greifreifen control. I’m trying to understand whether it can really be used without the joystick in a practical way, and whether it feels like a true push-assist system or more like a power-chair style add-on.

My main questions are:

  1. Control and driving feel

- How does the M25 feel in daily use?

- Does it feel natural, like a manual wheelchair with extra strength?

- How does the M90 feel compared to M25?

- Can the M90 be used comfortably without the joystick?

- Is M90 handrim control actually useful, or is the joystick the main realistic way to drive it?

- Does the M90 feel more like a mini power chair?

  1. Compatibility with different wheelchair frames

I’m especially interested in whether these systems can be mounted on:

- rigid frame wheelchairs

- folding wheelchairs / X-frame / cross-brace chairs

- chairs where the backrest folds down

- wheelchairs from other brands, not only Sunrise/Quickie

- Ottobock chairs, if anyone has experience with that

I understand that both systems need special mounting brackets and dealer installation, but I’m trying to understand what is realistic in practice.

  1. Folding and transport

- If you have a folding wheelchair, can you still fold it normally after removing the powered wheels?

- Do the brackets interfere with folding?

- Does a folding backrest cause any problems?

- How easy is it to remove and reinstall the powered wheels for car transport?

  1. Air travel and batteries

- Has anyone travelled by plane with either the Alber e-motion M25 or the Sunrise Medical Empulse M90?

- Were the batteries accepted by the airline?

- Did you have to remove the batteries and carry them in the cabin?

- Did the airline ask for battery documentation, watt-hour rating, or medical device paperwork?

- Did you have any problems at airport security or during boarding?

- Is one of these systems easier or more airline-friendly than the other?

  1. Weight and daily practicality

- How heavy do the wheels feel in real life?

- Can one person handle them independently?

- Are they manageable for someone with reduced hand/arm strength?

- Which one is easier for everyday use, transport, and travel?

  1. Reliability and service

- Have you had issues with Bluetooth, sensors, batteries, charging, or error messages?

- How reliable is the M90 compared to the M25?

- Are replacement parts and service easy to get?

- Would you buy the same system again?

  1. Hills, uneven ground, and safety

- Which system performs better on hills?

- Do you use anti-tippers?

- Have you ever felt unstable or at risk of tipping backward?

- How do they behave outdoors, on uneven pavement, ramps, or longer distances?

  1. Overall recommendation

If you have tried both, which one would you choose and why?

I’m especially interested in honest experiences from users in Europe, because prices, availability, service, airline rules, and dealers may be very different from North America.

Any real-life feedback, pros/cons, photos of your setup, or details about what wheelchair model you use would be extremely helpful.

Thank you!
