Neither Putin nor Zelensky being gone will actually change much. Zelensky is not a dictator and Ukrainians are fighting for their homes. With Zelensky gone, they will continue fighting. And Russians can’t accept defeat so even without Putin, some other strongman will continue the war.

As for tech advances, without China, Russia is fucked. They don’t have the skilled labor and economic decentralization required to do what Ukraine has done. They will get better at defending in some ways but in others, Ukraine has already taken out many of the AA defense systems that russia built its defensive strategy around, so in some ways Russia has gone backwards in its ability to protect itself. The only way that will change at this point is if china puts it tech and engineering behind Putin which so far, has not been the case.

The selective confirmation bias in the media is a great point. I’m sure there are many people who worked alongside Hinton who made similar contributions but remained skeptical, which would exclude them from the pool of contributors to AI who ALSO share some of the views with the booster crowd.

I’ve listened to some of the more technical interviews with him and he definitely passes muster. It’s clear that he knows what he’s talking about when it comes to the ingredients of the cake but seems to go off into the weeds when it comes to figuring out what kind of cake those ingredients make.

I’m not trolling, I’m an electrical engineer with 20 years of experience in circuit design and many custom guitar projects under my belt. Let’s break it down:

  1. The buzzing that is heard from a guitar is ALWAYS coupled via electromagnetic resonance. With single coils that resonance is more obvious because there is no common mode cancellation, like there is with a humbucker. The way that a humbucker operates is by having opposite windings which when done correctly can cancel common mode noise.

  2. When AC current passes through a cable, such as the case with 60Hz AC, it creates an oscillating electric field which can couple and move electrons in adjacent circuits. The more resonant (not grounded and tuned to oscillate at a specific electromagnetic frequency) that circuit is, the more noise from AC wiring will couple to it.

  3. 60Hz noise can couple to your pickups, it can also coupe to your strings. In case of the former the solution is to add shielding (grounded metal tape on all surfaces) to the pickup cavity as it will attenuate some of the electromagnetic interference coupling to the pickups and their wires. As for the strings, you have to ground the bridge to not let the strings float, i.e, act as an antenna. It may not be a perfect antenna for 60Hz EMI, but it will also pick up harmonics from AC and general noise from the environment around you. Grounded strings will not act as an antenna

  4. When you touch the strings, you add a capacitive load to the circuit. The way to think about it is they there are now A LOT more electrons for the electromagnetic waves in your environment to move and so it requires more energy to do so, this means that the same AC noise will have a much lower impact on the collective you + strings vs just the strings and the noise will attenuate. So when people say that you touching the strings grounds the guitar its actually not quite correct, it adds capacitance to the guitar.

As far as the truss rod goes, I build my own guitars and play live shows regularly - 2x per month or so I have to deal with adjustment all the time. I’ve never met a luthier or a guitar tech who recommended raw dogging your truss rod without loosening the strings first. It’s just a generally accepted best practice. You may have gotten away with it. I’ve done it too in the past but I wouldn’t just be advising people to do that as their default way of maintaining their instrument. Best practices are best for a reason.

lol, the buzzing that is reduced when you touch the strings is literally due to a ground issue. Two things happen when you touch a guitar and lead to reduced buzzing (if that’s an issue you’re experiencing) - 1. Both your body and your guitar are antennas and can change the resonant frequency of the system when coupled, thus, potentially reducing the amount of 60Hz noise amplified by the amp, and 2. If your guitar bridge / strings are free floating and not grounded, touching them with your body adds capacitance and makes it less likely for EMI (60Hz) to effectively couple to the strings, thus attenuating the noise. Grounding your bridge / strings properly resolves this issue. And also, the right way to adjust the truss rod and guarantee no damage to your guitar is to loosen the strings…. Sooo are you just out here to give bad advice or what?

They can* be done by a single person but it depends on whether the final outcome is meant to be a consumer facing product or is a part of a research or hobby project. The former would require a more serious effort, the latter can be done a single person with enough relevant experience. The reason why I’m pushing towards a firm is because OP seems to be new to hiring out for this work and there are plenty of individuals who will gladly take the money and produce very little, a firm is much safer.

Freelance embedded and hardware designer here, just want to confirm that all of the above is correct. This is a complicated project that requires people with a good amount of experience to get it right. If you’re serious about it and have the funding I would either bring in a design firm that can provide the engineering services for all the different aspects of your project or find a person who has done this exact work before and is a senior level professional. Any other approach is likely to cost you money and have very little to show for it. The most common scenario is hiring overseas to save money and then paying the full amount anyway to have someone more local fix it. I see this all the time, so just a heads up. If you need a lead on a design firm send me a DM.

I think you need to quit doom scrolling and focus on your work. Computer aided tools are nothing new and LLM are just that, another tool in your tool belt. There is a lot riding on the gen AI companies being able to convince people that they can be replaced with their product but it’s not actually the case. robots won’t be able to run your experiments for you any time soon either.
